Anybody know how to fix a broke rod?

I've got a 5-1/2' ultralight graphite spinning rod that I broke in two, in a fit of carelessness. It's broken below the first eye from the tip. I never got around to throwing it away & if I could make it serviceable again it would come in handy.

Doesn't have to be perfect, like maybe something involving a pin of some kind and some epoxy.

Any suggestions?

I have done this two different ways. If it is hollow, it is easier as you can just epoxy a piece of1/2" wire into the break and then wrap it.

If it is solid, then you can taper back about a 1/2" on both ends, (slope) epoxy together and then wrap. Make sure you get the same amount of slope to both pieces.

I've only ever broken one rod. It broke when the end was hanging out the boat and we brushed up next to a big tree. Snapped the top 10-12 inches off. So what did I do? I sent the broken rod, along with a note stating what happened to the rod maker. I received a new rod a couple weeks later along with a letter that pretty much said "Don't worry about it, happens all the time." It was a Berkley Lightning rod, btw.

Dang, wish I'da thoughta that, mrscott. It's a Diawa, bet they would have done the same. But I've butchered it up pretty good now.

I misremembered where the break was, it's actually about 9" above the ferrule. Last night I cut a pin for the inside & a sleeve for the outside from an old fiberglass rod.

It promptly broke under extreme pressure, I think the sleeve was a mistake - should have just wrapped it. The inside piece I used was less stiff than the rod so it probly would have been ok. Anyway, I tried again.

On the third try, I ended up with a working rod, but it's got two joints, with about an 8" section of fiberglass rod in the middle. Sort of a graphite/glass hybrid. Looks odd but feels pretty good, I'll try it out this weekend.

thanks, LD I think your advice was good I just mangled the execution. :)

Wish I could be that lucky! I don't want to remember how many trunk lids and miss-placed footsteps have taken out rods, over the years!

I can only remember breaking two poles in the process of fishing. One, a Cabela's Pro Guide, broke while jigging, and over reacted to to a tick, which was actualy a solid snag. The line had looped around the tip, and it was hanging on the line!

The other was a Bass Pro Shops rod (Bionic Blade?), which broke at the 2-piece ferrule. Again jigging, but this time it was trying to pull it out of the rocks. Bow and arrow method. I didn't think I had excess pressure on it, ie no more than a large smallie would provide. I did contact BPS, but it was out of warrantee, and that was that.

I was never really happy about any of my repair attempts. I would eventially end up with a new pole.

i have an old diawa 2 pc rod(it was my first brand new one i bought) that I carry in my truck tool box in case i get the itch to go fishing after work. i opened the box this week and found it had broken where the upper end slides into the lower half. I cut it off and had to sand it down some to get it to fit together. took a piece of shrink tube and slid it over to hold them together.

Re: Anybody know how to fix a broke rod?

Have had 2 Ugly Sticks and a Diawa break on me - all three occasions were fighting strippers (yea, I like a fight and use lighter rods and line than I should at times). In all 3 occasions I either sent back to the manufacturer or the store where purchased and explained what happened, asking where it could be fixed, and the costs. In all three cases walked away with a new (and better) rod than I had originally at no cost to me! Guess what all my new rods are now?
