What's up with that thing? My wife showed me one the other night and talked about how cool it was.

I told her to go to the library.:D

They are pricey (around $400 I think) and you still have to pay to download the books and magazines.

I was looking and books are around $9-15 to download that could add up quickly
but you can't convince them of that, It gets stuck in their minds "I NEED IT"

Sony makes one , too. Don't know about either one. Need something for the boat though. Don't need 100# of books on board.

Ok, so go buy the hardcover version of a current best seller, and pay $27.

The latest version is pretty decent, except for in bright sunlight.

Can download podcasts and audio books.

lots of the books are only a couple bucks.

The magazines would suc though, as there are no pictures of the boating bikini babes.

interesting, would save me some headaches. Sylvia is obsessive about books. we have over 300 linear feet of book shelves, they are double stacked. she buys 5 to 7 new books a month. it is not the $ factor, that is her $, it is the overwhelming storage factor.

I think its a great idea for those that travel ! I've seen the SONY's for $299. My only problem is that the way techology changes so fast, how long before its obsolete and the no longer make downloadable books for it. Especially, since its the first one of its kind.

Re: anybody have a Kindel?

My wife wanted one and I bought it for her for her birthday back in June. She LOVES IT!!! She did actually tend to buy new releases (or at least wanted to) so the $9.99 Kindle download is cheaper than a new hard back. Plus there are many free or inexpensive downloads available. It's a nifty device. I was thrilled to buy it for her because it's always me wanting the gadgets and it nice for her to want one for once.

They are really nice, easy to read and good contrast.

I prefer to read on paper... Unless I'm here of course.

I'd never read a novel online. I might print it and read it but electronic books just dont work for me. Be prepared for it to be either loved to death or collecting dust.

MANY available on eBay.

I'd like to see some open standards for this type of technology. For me, it would be important to be able to move my "books" to new book readers over time and keep backups of my books should the device fail.

I like holding a regular book in my hands and displaying them on shelves, but I can see some value of carrying around a library on a small device.

Re: anybody have a Kindel?

After a month of doing my research on the Sony or Kindel there were more cons then pros on the Kindel from other peoples blogs. Also people sitting next to us on the plane to the Bahamas were reading from Sonys and they also looked at the Kindel before making their decission. I settled on the Sony with finger tip control on the screen. They are both pricey too. She uses it on the beach.

I think Sony makes two models.

Strikes me as a terrible way to try to enjoy good literature. Maybe comic books and trashy novels.

How does one place a bookmark or make margin notes??

Reading is so much more than just having words in front of you. We are fast becoming an illiterate culture. :(

Re: anybody have a Kindel?

I disagree JB. My wife is a very avid reader and absolutely loves hers. We'd also like to get one for my mother-in-law who doesn't drive and has to rely on my father-in-law to get her books or take her to the store. With the Kindle she can buy books from her easy chair. They are as readable as a printed page. The display is not at all comparable to a computer screen. Amazon keeps your entire library for you and can be re-downloaded to the device at any time. I think it's a great product.

By using the QWERTY keyboard, you can add annotations to text, just like you might write in the margins of a book. And because it is digital, you can edit, delete, and export your notes. Using the new 5-way controller, you can highlight and clip key passages and bookmark pages for future use. You'll never need to bookmark your last place in the book, because Kindle remembers for you and always opens to the last page you read.

With Kindle, you are able to download and enjoy more than 50,000 audio titles from Audible.com, including bestselling audio books, radio programs, audio newspapers, and magazines.

In addition to being able to delete, and then redownload at a later date, I know some people are backing up all books on their pc.

Not to mention the built in dictionary. My wife uses that feature all the time.

Agreed 100%. I read, a LOT!. I will never like the impersonal feel of electronic media compared to the good old warmth of a book in hand.

Re: anybody have a Kindel?

I bought my wife one for her birthday in July. She absolutely loves it, easy for her to read. At the rate she was buying books (sometimes hard cover new publications) it has nearly paid for itself by now. The only problem I can state is that I used to read the books after she did, but she uses the Kindle so much that I can't get to it to read the books.
