Our gallant Royal Air Force search and rescue crews could do with some de-icer........ helo freezes over

The crew of a Sea King helicopter were forced to abandon a rescue mission in the Cairngorm mountains in Scotland when the winchman noticed the rotors were icing up

Been there, done that, it's pretty horrible: in our case we were "hedge-hopping"; the viz was so poor that the pilot was flying slowly forwards and landing every few yards to get his bearings. Then he noticed that the aircraft was becoming uncontrollable; at that point instead of looking forwards we looked up and saw that the rotors had iced up real bad.
Royal Navy must have been made of sterner stuff than the RAF: we slept in the helo until the storm passed: the wimps!!! :D :D

Wow that is some serious stuff. Good thing the pilot had his head together on that one. I've known many pilots with the "Oh I can handle it syndrome". That can be bad on the crews health.
