One of the twisters came within 1/4 mi of our house. It was too close at that distance! As we watched its approach on the local Weather radar we new it was gonna be close.there were black bands of percipitation on the color radar, whats black i asked the misses?never saw that before.5 mins or so before it hit it went from very windy gusts to 45+, to an erie dead calm, silent not even a bird chirping. Then the wind picked up again, power went out.I looked out the window it was dark as night at 3:40pm and the shrubs and small trees appeared to be shaking, blowing quickly back and forth, thunder and lightning approached quickly every 2/3 seconds as it passed then the thunder quickly move away,we hid in the central bath w the dogs. The thunder shook popcorn ceiling on the furniture!down the road hollering distance 4 houses destroyed and a barn and silos damaged. As we rode around looking at the destruction wife said we need to start going back to church.

mommicked, we had a Tornado come within a couple hundred feet from where I worked 15 or so years ago in the middle of the day, I remember that sound like it was yesterday, not the freight train everyone talks about but the pure silence, not even birds. I have since forgotten the sound of the Tornado but I don't think I will ever forget that silence, easily the eeriest sensation I have ever felt

I am happy you and yours are ok

Thoughts and Prayers to those involved.....

On Saturday my daughter, husband and two toddlers went to Sanford to look at some model houses at a modular home builder. They got there at 3:00pm,at the exact time the tornado was coming from the west. She said it felt like she was inside a ball of lightning......she started unbuckling the kids before the car stopped and they ran into the model and waited for things to settle down. When they came out they saw a brick home about a block away that had been destroyed. That same tornado went through the Saint Andrews sub-division and crossed 421 and wiped out a huge warehouse and then hit Lowes. She was lucky in her timing because they had planned at eating at cracker barrel across from lowes and then going to lowes and possibly biglots which was also destroyed. She said it was huge like the ones you see out in the western US.

Another thing that was different than your average severe Tstorm was the speed it moved. The thunder started faintly in the distance,Boom,BOOM,BOOM,every few seconds. It seemed to get louder each time and no cracking, just BOOM,It was like a giant was stomping towards us as it shook the house more w each bolt.as it passed it struck 5 or ten times all around us like bombs going off for a minute, and then you could hear it quickly leaving BOOM,Boom, boom. My wife is still shaken up by this storm.Guess Im gonna hafta build a shelter outback!I finally had to file my rakers on the chainsaw.I remember the 80s twister woke me at midnight as it passed 5 or 8 miles away and the lightning looked like a strobelight lighting the sky,the thunder was a continuos rumble and I knew it was something different that night.I dont believe we had a tornado watch that night.

My brother lives in Moncure 12 mi. from Sanford,I live in Apex south of 1010/Holly Springs rd. intersection. The Sanford twister is the same one that hit here.We went to Harris lake yesterday and the twister ran right down the shoreline at the dam destroying and tossing trees in the water everywhere.Plenty of new fishing structure all over the place!

Yeah you were definitely in the path it originated in Carthage and it pretty much followed us-1. The national weather service rated it a EF-3 with winds up to 165mph and said at one point it was almost 3 miles wide!!! I am glad it missed you. My daughter is planning on builder a new house and I have been stressing the importance of building it above minimum code requirements......maybe she will listen now!! For only a few hundred dollars more she can get a 130mph roof.

Definitely a basement. When I built my vacation home I chose a modular because it was built and certified to withstand a EF-2 tornado and an F-3 hurricane. I have been through some serious storms and could not even notice from inside. My permanent home is site build and you can hear it creak and pop in bad weather!.

Re: Anybody from the forum in the tornado area.

most of the damaged homes Ive seen are from large trees falling on them.some have wind damage also, but the big pines and falling oaks destroyed some well built brick homes! We have had droughts for years and I hear we are almost out of that.I hope the weather does not become more violent w that change. Now its time for Hurricane season and its been a while since we had any of that, Knock on wood.At least w the hurricanes youve got plenty of time to prepare,or get the H*&% out!not really an option w the twisters comin at 50/70 MPH.The local news did a good job as usual, but I got the feeling they were overwelmed by the large number of reports coming in from all over the state, all at once.Just too many to keep everyone informed or warned. They said "A radar indicated Tornado in Holly Springs",but It had been on the ground almost all the way from Carthage.
