I have this big yellow hound dog, Dusty, who will go fishing with me when nobody else will. He's not that interested in the fish, mostly he just likes to go.

But, sometimes he alerts me to schools of fish before I see 'em on the graph, by getting up with his elbows on the gunnel, wagging his tail a lot and making a strange kind of whining sound. I'm talking about schools of baitfish down 20, 25, even 30 feet. He sees 'em off the bow before the transducer on the stern picks 'em up.

If he could tell me the depth & water temp, I could toss out the electronics!

So far I've just been white bass or striper fishing with him in the boat, but I'm thinking of taking him bass fishing (LMB) since you hardly ever catch fish that are under the boat. Wonder if he can pick me out a hawg or two. Would that be legal in a tournament?

Does he see 'em or smell 'em or hear 'em or what? Anybody else experience this?

If I could just teach him to drive the boat, or the truck. And operate the trolling motor. :)

Sounds like you have an unfair advantage. Great dog but I don't think he would be allowed in a tournament. If you could also teach him to catch them and clean them for you that would be even better.

My beagle Harley does the same thing. I have to keep her tied up though. She likes to jump in and go after the fish herself. I have read that hounds are known to be good fish finders. She's more of a crappie dog, but she's found a few bass in her day.

Generally, she'll whine, just as Dusty does.

This time of year I just sit back and troll the brush piles until Harley let's out her song, then I drop a jig - BAM - crappie. ;)

well I don't know what it is but, my pooches like commin' out with me and can't wait to get in the boat.. they're always lookin' in the water, whinin' and such but, I've never related the two instances.. hmmm .. gonna have to keep an eye on this!

One thing thats interesting is an old rancher I know out in the Dakotas has an old farm dog of 'mixed heritage' that can pick out THE rock you throw in one of the ponds on his place.. absolutely amazing .. he'll give up on it before he brings you a different rock . . never saw anything like that as well.. gotta be something to this tho..

I have a nephew that has a lab that catches fish. No bull. One day at the lake he was playing fetch with him, and figured out that the dog would go into the water after rocks. He would actually dive down under the water and fetch the rock you throw into the water. Usually 4 ft or less of water. Anyway, my nephew was out fishing in a boat one day and caught a bass. When ever he released the bass back into the water, the dog dove in after it and bought it back to the boat. :D
Body, "the bass fishing dog" we call him.

...and open the long-necks. Beginning to sound like a Bud commercial.
