If you had and air-cooled VW, then I'm your man (I'm an air-cooled VW nut), but not into the new Beetles.

You may want to try www.vwvortex.com. Lots of smart folks over there who know all about your "water pumper".

Re: Any VW guys here?

Well..... Anybody got a service manual for an 05 beetle 2.5, or any other VW with the same engine?? I can figure it out if i have the manual.
But here goes the question.

On a cold start, regardless of temperature, the coolant light on the dash flashes blue for a few minutes, then flashes red for a few minutes, then after the engine warms up it goes out.
At highways speeds the red light comes on for a few moments, then goes out. It's completely at random. Then engine is not overheating, and the coolant is full.
My first guess is a CTS. But when I plug in the scan tool, the CTS is reporting back a reasonable temperature.
I'd like to manually test it with a multimeter, but I don't know what it's supposed to read hot/cold. And I have no idea where it is.
Theese beetles are built by midgets for midgets. Its wicked tight in the engine bay and you basically can't work on it hot it's so tight.

I had a similar issue with my subaru. My coolant light would turn on and then the aux fans....like it was overheating...but in reality the temp was fine. For less that $20 I bought a new coolant temp sensor...fixed. That was 4 years ago.

This is what you want click on link
http://www.anthonydanna.com/vw/tempsender.htm
More than likely the sender than the sensor ifin you have no codes...sensor is close to windsheild if you must check ....you will see 2 the one closest to the windsheid

Thanks for the effort dolluper. I was hoping for something a bit more technical though.

You wanting someone to chime in with an overstatement of the problem that could cost you excess $$$ and waste your time?

Sounds like a dang good diagnosis and pray that's the problem !

dont use the volt meter chances are u will burn out what ever you might put it on, the electronics are often micro voltage.

Ummm . . . no.

First, I don't know of any automobile manufacturer that holds voltage tolerances to the microvolt. This is totally absurd. You would need a differential voltmeter to accurately measure these levels.

Second, Most modern volt meters have an input impedance in the meg- or gig-ohm range which will load the circuit very little.

Third, when you are measuring the voltage of a circuit, you aren't injecting any voltage. Therefore, there is no danger of "burning out" anything.

uhmmmm..... i'm pretty sure I can use both my 15 year old Fluke 8 (about 150 bucks at the time). or my 2 year old Fluke 88V (about 500 bucks).... on even electronics on the space shuttle without fear of burning anything out.
Interestingly enough.... both of those meters are within 20 millivolts of eachother... and the old fluke still has the original leads
