Any tricks to remove Volvo plugs?

I can't believe I have to post such a basic question but I can't get the plugs out of my '95 302 Volvo "HU" series engine. The manifolds block a normal socket and universal joint, there is not enough clearance to come straight in, I'll pick up a 5/8 T handle plug remover later this week. Are some brands of exhaust manifolds designed to make this any easier?
Sorry for such a basic question.

You can modify a regular sparkplug socket if you want.

I'd have to find a machine shop that would do it. If I do, what would you use to turn it? As I try to visualize it the universal would still hit the manifold. Any addtional tricks?

I just used a bench grinder. Stuck an extension in one end to keep my fingers out of the way, and started grinding. It is't a precision cut, just some have a lathe and know how to use it.
One guy used a little 4" angle grinder with a coarse sanding disc on it to grind it down.
