I've decided that the old '69 Johnson 9.5 is on its last legs this season, and getting to be more trouble than I'm willing to invest in it.

I may have a chance to buy a Nissan 8 hp 2-stroke, "a few years old" from a cousin. Don't know the asking price or year, but it has been reliable and never needed repairs according to him. I don't have a serial number or anything yet. If/when the time comes, I'll probably be able to take it and try it out for a few days before buying.

Anyone have experience owning one of these?

If I go for it, I'm assuming that I can expect it to move a light 14' aluminum Ouchita about as well as the 9.5 did when new....? It used to go pretty good, I guessed around 20 at the time (very rough estimate, calculated by time/distance, this was before the days of GPS!!!)

By the way, where would I find the serial number on this one?

Thanks.

Unless your Johnson has extensive corrosion damage,
keep it; wether or not you get the Nissan. The Johnson is a great motor, and should live longer than you or me.
So, the Nissan depends on the price.

My dad has an '04 9.8 2-stroke on a 14' Sea Nymph (modified V). It pushes the boat faster than the '76 15hp Johnson it replaced, and it planes the boat with 3 adults and gear. He's only put about 50 hours on it, but so far it's been trouble-free and easy to start.
