Looking for something that has all of the tools and a good variety of materials to choose from. Anyone know of a good kit for beginners? a good brand for tools? and materials? etc...
thanks!
I am an orvis fan. They have a store about an hour soth of me and they have great stuff http://www.orvis.com/store/product_...73&group_id=10135&cat_id=10136&subcat_id=6176 LL Bean is also good http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/54707?page=fly-tying-starter-kit
I have not done it in about 20 years but it is fun and you will find yourself "collecting" hairs and fethers from everything!! Great hobby.
I usually purchase my supplies from orvis......excellent quality supplies too.
Yeah I got my kit from Cabellas. It was the best one they had. Like Bob said I have even used the fur off of my long haired cat. Hell once you get into it nothing will be sacred LOL. I make all kinds of flies and jigs. I even buy bass jigs and enhance them a little.
Good Luck and have fun.
Let your imagination fly.
Cool Kit ! I can't wait to see some of your work! Maybe next year I'll haul you up to Eagle Lake and introduce you to Jay Fair and Val Aubrey. Val is always good for a few lessons and Jay is really free with good advice and cool tips you would never think of.
Can't beat tips from the pros. I can't wait to get started.
Any tips or advice that would help me get past some early mistakes I'm bound to have?
Any other tools that I'll need to get started besides the whip finisher (whatever that is, lol) ??
Barnes and Nobles downtown SR. Seriously, get yourself some very basic books, learn from them and keep them for reference. Just like a good G-Loomis, these you can consider Heritage items.
Any recommendations? There's like 2200 books on fly tying on Amazon right now .
Buy them all, scan them and then send them back unread. LOL... no ROFLOL.. How about this. On Saturday we'll get your trolling motor setup and then I'll follow you back and we can stop and see Josh. I need some orange Jay Fairs anyway and probably a half dozen other things too.. LOL..
Oh by the way, don't buy a battery for your motor, I have two nearly new Optima Blue Tops for you. They're lighter than a standard deep cycle and I'm a little concerned about weight distribution. They are just sitting on the shelf in the garage and will probably go bad before I ever use them again. These are 120 minute RCA's that I replaced with the two 240's that we ran on all day at the lake.
I can give you a good tip........ be careful with the glue since it will screw up things.
