Cabelas has some, I don't know how good the kits are but I like all the other stuff they have in the store... usually good quality.

I am an orvis fan. They have a store about an hour soth of me and they have great stuff http://www.orvis.com/store/product_...73&group_id=10135&cat_id=10136&subcat_id=6176 LL Bean is also good http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/54707?page=fly-tying-starter-kit

I have not done it in about 20 years but it is fun and you will find yourself "collecting" hairs and fethers from everything!! :D Great hobby.

I usually purchase my supplies from orvis......excellent quality supplies too.

Eric, You might take a ride over to Outdoor Pro tomorrow and ask to talk to Josh. He's a pretty straight shooter and will show you what to look for. They also have a good selection of supplies. Their prices are high so you'll probably do better online just don't forget to add in the shipping and watch the tax when you're comparing prices. Sometimes saving a buck in the selling prices can cost you five in the shipping.

Yeah I got my kit from Cabellas. It was the best one they had. Like Bob said I have even used the fur off of my long haired cat. Hell once you get into it nothing will be sacred LOL. I make all kinds of flies and jigs. I even buy bass jigs and enhance them a little.

Good Luck and have fun.

as with most fishing items, money is always an issue. I found that Wapsi starter kit online, but the deluxe version, new for $59.99. I may pick that one up. Then I can get any extra materials from the pro shop, or I guess from my neighbors cat, lol.

Cool Kit ! I can't wait to see some of your work! Maybe next year I'll haul you up to Eagle Lake and introduce you to Jay Fair and Val Aubrey. Val is always good for a few lessons and Jay is really free with good advice and cool tips you would never think of.

Can't beat tips from the pros. I can't wait to get started.

Any tips or advice that would help me get past some early mistakes I'm bound to have?

Any other tools that I'll need to get started besides the whip finisher (whatever that is, lol) ??

Barnes and Nobles downtown SR. Seriously, get yourself some very basic books, learn from them and keep them for reference. Just like a good G-Loomis, these you can consider Heritage items.

Buy them all, scan them and then send them back unread. LOL... no ROFLOL.. How about this. On Saturday we'll get your trolling motor setup and then I'll follow you back and we can stop and see Josh. I need some orange Jay Fairs anyway and probably a half dozen other things too.. LOL..

Oh by the way, don't buy a battery for your motor, I have two nearly new Optima Blue Tops for you. They're lighter than a standard deep cycle and I'm a little concerned about weight distribution. They are just sitting on the shelf in the garage and will probably go bad before I ever use them again. These are 120 minute RCA's that I replaced with the two 240's that we ran on all day at the lake.

I'd love to go down to the pro shop and check stuff out. As for the batteries that's an awesome offer, but you don't have to do that. You could Craigslist them and pay for some of your pro shop purchase or something. I still owe you lunch for helping me with this motor though, so we'll have to find somewhere I could park with my boat. Hank's Creekside is right over by the Flamingo/Lions, but no real parking there. Hopefully getting that motor on will be easier for you than it has looked for me.

Re: Any suggestions on a fly tying kit?

I can give you a good tip........ be careful with the glue since it will screw up things.

Go purchase a bunch of cheap hooks to practice with.

It is a learning curve and can be fun.

Re: Any suggestions on a fly tying kit?

Wanted to say thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Got my Wapsi Deluxe kit in the mail today, and there's a ton of stuff there. Nice getting it off of ebay for $40 off retail too :D

Seems that you never have enough supplies though. Trying to tie some dragonflies for some local lakes. The black and blue striped dragonflies are everywhere this year.

Any suggestion on type?

There's the all foam or the mono wrapped tail?

Anyone had problems with the mono tailed ones staying together, since many don't have you tie your fly line to the actual eye of the hook? Any tips for this type?
