Any Suggestions? Motor stalling.

Hey guys. I'm having a problem with my 2000 130HP 2-stroke Johnson Outboard. I've tried everything I can think of short of replacing plug wires/fuel pump, etc in an attempt to fix this thing. She runs GREAT at high speed but when I go back down to slow-forward (1000 RPM or less), I get misfires and if I back it all the way off to slowest speed forward, it will usually stall out. This is especially tough when trying to troll at 3mph and it stalls. I've replaced the plugs and thermostats (vernatherms) in an attempt to find the problem. I get a puff of blue smoke each time it misfires so I assume this is unburnt fuel/oil. Someone told me this is probably a lean condition hence why I replaced the thermostats. I'm wondering if something is wrong with the fuel pump ... maybe getting too much oil injected? I can't seem to figure this one out and hate taking it to a mechanic but I will if I can't solve this.

ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys,
Mike

Did this happen over the winter? Likely a clogged low speed jet.

I've been having the problem for a while. I had somewhat forgotten about it because the boat runs so well at higher speed and I haven't been out trolling since early last year. It's much more noticeable when trolling for hours on end.

I checked spark last night and it seems to be getting strong spark to the plugs ... besides I think if it were a spark issue I'd see the problem at high speed too.

The low-speed jets are adjustable on this engine using an allen wrench. I'm thinking of trying to adjust all four carbs down a half turn, see how she runs, down another half turn, see how she runs, etc ... then back them off using the same method.

I guess it could be a clogged low speed jet as you stated, what can I do about it?

Thanks,
Mike

if you think it's lean shouldn't you open the low jets. get a little more fuel to it. go 1/4 turns.

I'm not sure exactly. I mean it SEEMS like it's getting too much fuel and loading up but I had a guy tell me it sounded like a lean condition to him. I figured maybe the best thing would be to turn the low-speed jets in and then back them off until I get good performance ... if this is what's causing the problem. Very strange ... I wish I knew more about 2-strokes but this is part of the learning process I guess!

Spray power tune into the carbs while running, if it picks up you have a lean condition, if it stays the same you are running rich, if it bogs down your carbs are good. If your carbs are good, (which it doesn`t really sound like they are), then you have an electrical problem...
