Hi any one who knows anything about mercury engies or not for that matter plz i need your help ...Ive got a merc 9.8, blueband (1976), which is a non runner i have plenty of compression but the engine just wont work. I cant find a serial number.<br />so any suggestions that i could maybe try plz suggest, as you can prob tell im a novis where it comes to engines.I have no maual so if any one does and they feel like writing a few quotations from it that would also be fantastic...Im trying to get my hands on one, so if anyones selling one even better.<br />....so if you think that you can help me in anyway plz reply to this post as im desperate to get it started and do not want to give up <br /><br />Thankyou everyone ...<br /> :) :) :)

Three things needed to run.. Compression, spark, and fuel.<br /><br />Since you have compression, check for spark (use a spark tester from auto parts store). If no spark then you know it's ignition related. If you have a good spark then most likely it's fuel related.<br /><br />With this info, we can delve more into the problem..

Mr. rogerwa is right on the money, except for 1 other ingredient--air! I think we can safely assume air is getting in. <br /><br />A real easy way to see if you have spark is to remove the plugs, connect the wires and place the base of the plug in contact with the engine block. Give the starter a few pulls and you should see that plug spark. If that looks good try spraying some starting fluid in the carb. Make sure you follow the instructions because this is highly flammible stuff.<br /><br />BTW - try amazon.com for a manual.

Hello,<br />Sounds good to me except for the starting fluid tip. Starting fluid has no oil and will cause extensive engine damage. Use 50:1 mix in a spray bottle instead.<br />Good Luck,<br />Little Bear
