...how it sank in 1000 ft of water and still hit a rock?? I hate these big news flashes then you have to look hard to find the final details.

Well, in that part of the world, with that topography, that's not too hard to believe. 1000 ft depth may not be that far offshore, and it took an hour to sink, so it would not be a shock to me if those indeed were the details.

I'm sure there will be more details to emerge when the enquiry into the sinking is done.

Re: Any news on the BC ferry?

The Queen of the North ran into Gil Island at
near full speed 19 knots. The Island has rock
out cropping not far from shore. She was way off
course as I mentioned in the earlier thread.
Gil Island is a large land mass. The ship was
traveling South through Greenville channel on
her way through Wright Sound which is just west
of the Douglas Channel. If the ship had of maneuvered
to Port side she would safely navigated
through Wright Sound and made her way past Gil
Island and on to Mckay Reach and on up Princess
Royal channel. Instead she was left to exit Greenville
Channel and steamed directly into Gil Island which
is approximately 4 miles out into Wright Sound.

Now you wont get this info from the news. But if
you look at the navigation charts for the area.
This is the route that the Queen of the North
takes. We know she ran into a rock. But the only
rock in the area is Gil Island.

Hartley Bay the Small Indian Fishing village were
the rescuers came to the aid of the Queen is on
the East side of Promise Island just a short
distance from Gil Island not more than 5 miles
from were she struck the Island.

Their is a strong movement for the Name of the
replacement Vessel to be "Spirit of Hartley Bay."
