just curious how many folks dip their own or just
buy them at the bait shop?
PS, a "dip net" is not a "cast" net...

MY...I own a cast net but they are not legal here in minnesota, I sure miss using it. I have a creek on my place but I do not think dipping would be effective however I would like to put in a trap this next summer.

neumans, they are thick as thieves here.
a little bread in summer, and we dip 10-20 at a time...
winter rock salt is the best way to preserve.
keep very well over short summer and cats seem
to luv the salty smell/taste. mostly the kids
catch panfish or perch on the "salties".
if/when i graduate to big water on lk. ontario
(bigger boat :) , will be tryin to net "allewise"
(sp)???
some introduced species the trout/salmon get fat
on ;) learnin all over again...

Re: any minnows dippers?

I get my own. I use a little "minnow trap" that I got at Wallyworld for next to nothing. I usually just put a bunch of old crackers or stale bread in and I'll get more minnows than I know what to do with. I use 'em for flounders.

Once I put a bunch of crab parts (guts, etc) in the trap and I got a bunch of EELS! Yikes! Turns out their pretty good bait for stripers this time of year. :)

I haven't tried my minnow trap in fresh water yet but I'm betting that it'd work just as well. Anyone use one in fresh water?

Have always bought fatheads, shiners, little suckers, etc. Real hard to find big, 12" plus suckers though (for quick strike rigging 'lunges in the late fall). And to lazy to catch the suckers from creeks.

When I used to bait fish break wall on Lake Michigan for Kings I'd catch alewives with bare gold aberdeen hooks on dropper over a bell sinker. Deal is I guess that alewives think the gold hooks were fresh water shrimp or something. Sure worked good though. ;)

I collect my bait from the channels every fall
with a net .As the water level drops its easier
to collect them. So I watch and wait for the best
time to collect the swarm of bait fish. Spottail
shiners and sticklebacks are concentrated and
easy to collect. I rinse them off and freeze e'm
for ice fishing ,walleye , burbot and perch and
always have enough left over to last the summer.I aways salt them before they hit the freezer.

I dip my own in the spring and summer. Trout love the fresh ones. Have a little minnow rig I make and use for the trout. Makes the minnows spin like crazy (use 2 swivels in the rig and line still gets twisted) but the brown and brook trout cannot resist it!

Have a little creek that runs though the back acre and I use a minnow trap with popcorn-holds up real well- and catch all I need, 2-3 dozen, in about an hour

Re: any minnows dippers?

Hello Mellowyellow
I dip all the time in the Fingerlakes and Irondequoit Bay.In the bay it is mostly fatheads, but in the fingerlakes it is more shiners and in early spring the very occasional mooneye. At Slaters Creek by the power station in Charlotte there are more alewives than you will know what to do with. The gamewarden saw me doing it once and it was fine with him, but he warned me never to take minnows from one lake and use them in another for fear of contamination of populations. He also told me that minnows sold in bait stores are supposed to be sterile and totally disease free.I do think though that it is good advice.
Mops.

Re: any minnows dippers?

thanks for the tip rolmops. I live by oak orchard
creek and when we were out last year, the alewise
were really thick, jumping all over in my wake.
Irondequoit and some of the bays to the west are
deff. on my list this year. not brave/stupid
enuff to take my 16'trihull bowrider out on the
big water in search of the big lakers and salmon.
been looking to upgrade and have been keeping my
eye out for a Starcraft Islander.
maybe someday we can hook up and wet a line together :D
seems like there's a good number of
Iboats members in our area... we should try to all
get together this summer.
regards,
M.Y.
