I agree with every point upinsmoke made. RE: the size. From my experience with both Merc and OMC (both old - 70s and 80s), for those older engines, the factory manuals encompass several years and several sizes of engines. Therefore huge - and fairly expensive. As he said, Ken Cook has OEM manuals - also mastertechmarine.com has them. The proprietor of that company actually called me on the phone to warn me of the expense and size (adding more shipping expense) of the OEM manual for my old engine and suggested I look for a used one. H's a great guy (and I've bought other stuff from him) I then found manuals for both of my engines on ebay - just make sure you are familiar with the exact age of your engine so you can be certain if a manual will cover it.
