I have an '81 Evinrude 50 and am doing a lower unit reseal and water pump, got the top half done fine now I can't get the hub off the prop shaft, this is not the rpop but the carrier just inside the lower that the prop shaft runs through.

The lower is off Ebay and I have run it for 3 years now with no problems but apparently the PO ran it without the front spacer on the prop so the housing is actually machined into the lower case by a big groove and I can't get it to budge.

So far I have tried PB Blaster and heat and I put a pair of vice grips on the hub and another pair against the prop shaft and whacked it but nothing, then I tried a punch and whacking it sideways(this has worked before on a different lower).

I have 2 other hubs so I am not worried about wrecking it I just want it out without destroying the lower casing which I don't have a spare for.

Any ideas boys????

Have you tried to grind the carrier or the houseing with a dremial tool, or cutting the carrier out with a hacksaw blade by its self and vise grips to act as a handle.

Hope this helps, Oldman570

I was going to try every thing else before I broke out the grinder but that is my last option, I am currently eyeballing the handle to my caulk gun since I can get it behind one of the 3 fins on it.

Thanks Will, mine is a 2 cylinder and only has 3 which have been removed and I don't have the fancy OMC puller, my buddy owns a body shop and has a slide hammer but don't know if he has any attachments small enough to fit in it and I am just changing seal not pulling gears so I don't need to pulll the retaining rings.

I have rebuilt a couple lowers and never had this problem before, it has to be running the prop without the spacer put a lip on it that I need to get off.

Thanks for the suggestions and have a Merry Christmas, when I get it I will be back with how.

Got it, yes I am working on my engine on Christmas day, had a few hours in between things and don't want to watch ice skating, it was corroded in, gave up on saving it and got out a chisel and started cutting and was getting a bunch of white powder which is of coarse alunim rust.

The casing is fine which suprised me, it was just the carrier that was corroded and I am almost sure that is where my lower leak was coming from, off to dig out my spare and finnaly sinish this job.

Don't know if it was on sale but the wife did get some egg nog with bourbon in it although I prefer a nice Blue Moon myself.

This lower must have been a salt engine at one point, I almost remember the buying it from a guy out of Florida, the rest of it is fine, just that one poart didn't want to come out, glad I had a spare on hand.

Now I just need to get it into work and rebuild the skeg I snapped off this summer.

Don't over do the egg nog or you could have another headache. Glad that you have it apart.
