I am thinking of buying this outboard for my project boat, she is very ugly but the guys says she runs and starts great. The hood is obviously going to be needin repairs or replacement but if thats the only thing wrong i think it would be a good deal. He wants $250 for it. Its a 35 hp tiller long shaft. what you think.

Late 70's, early 80's. Piece of crap due to age and obvious abuse. Steer clear.

so your thinking because it beat up on the outside he most likely didn't take care of the motor? Is it hard to find parts for a motor like this? Would you recommend a evinrude/johnson from around the same time since there are still parts for those? I only have about $400 to spendon a motor thats why i'm looking at older motors.
thanks for the reply

"so your thinking because it beat up on the outside he most likely didn't take care of the motor?"

Absolutely...POS

"Is it hard to find parts for a motor like this?"

Absolutely...The model was discontinued and ignition parts went out of production 15 years ago.

"Would you recommend a evinrude/johnson from around the same time since there are still parts for those?"

Absolutely not...A 30 year old engine is a money pit, regardless of brand. Age alone makes a 30 year old engine a crap shoot. The last thing you need is to drop $400.00 into an older engine and then start spending money on it to keep it running.

It's always possible you can find an older engine that isn't a nightmare...But, chances are you aren't that lucky fellow who will find one. Do yourself a favor and save up another $400.00 or $500.00 and find something 10 years old or less that isn't worn out.
