The condenser unit on my A/C unit shot craps the other day. How tough is it to install an new one? I have seen them available on E-bay and it looks like sweating in a couple of lines and hooking up the electrical.

Am I missing something?

When a condenser/compressor quits the first (simplest, cheapest) thing to check is the start capacitor.

I used to buy broke window units for pocket change and change the capacitor. About 3 of 5 were thus repaired and turned into fishing bux.

after checking the electrical power to the compressor, if ok,I would cut a line (low side)and see if you have black death,if you do you will need to flush intire system, condenser, evaporator and lines, replace compressor and system oil,and I would recommend installing a inline filter, then evacuate and recharge.
yes,you can sweat the lines, but you need to use a acetaline & oxygen torch (shop torch with oxygen)with silver solder and flux. some words you just can't get right...

Check your compressor contactor, if it takes a few seconds to pop the breaker and not immediately. You may have a contactor that has pitted and burned points. This causes one leg of the 240 line not able to make a good path for the current. Just hope it hasn't burnt any windings in the compressor if it is the culprit. Again, good luck.......SS

Not to mention the ants and critters that get zapped in the contacts.

Pull the wires on the compresser and check(olms) between terminals and the case. If you read any one to the case the coils are grounded. DOA. Do a visual check of all electrical components. Most componet failures are evident like burned wires, swollen capacitors, burned contactor and loose connectors. INMHO Never buy a used condensing unit unless you know how it was removed and stored. It positivly must be sealed and have positive pressure from freon or nitrogen. If not stored correctly moisture will enter the system an attack the oil which causes acid. Best bet IF your compressor is grounded is to not relace it , replace the condensing unit. to much acid stays in the copper coil tubing. Be sure to add hi and lo side filter driers. Remeber, look for the simple things first. Good luck I am sure you don't need another boat anchor
