Hey Snapperbait
Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton are my guitar heros... I'm also a big Doobie Bros and Steely Dan fan.
My main instrument is the bass, Rickenbacker 4001 Stereo fretless.
My favourite guitar is the good old Fender Strat - love the out of phase sound.
These days I've been learning to use Pro-Tools on an Apple Mac, lots of fun.
That Guild's a nice guitar too. :)

I play AIR GUITAR does that count???
Actually i purchased a student guitar for my oldest daughter and even though she has not had any lessons she has been able to come up with some stuff that actually sounds good just like she does on the keyboard we gave her a few years back. She has actually taught herself a couple of songs on that keyboard and is only 7. I will be keeping a close eye on this topic as I know nothing about these things and would love to learn a little.

62 Kiwi: Did you hear the album Neck and Neck that Mark Knpofler did with Chet atkins?? All I can say is Awesome...Rickenbackers have to be the coolest guitars on the planet.. I love those 12 string Rickenbackers like the 360...The way they ring out sends chills up my spine..
Peterfishbuster: Sure Air guitar counts as long as you use a tennis racquet or fishin pole as your instrument.. :D Keep encouraging your daughter and go for the lessons.. At least a few.. I play by ear and never had any lessons.. I can't read a bit of music so after 15 years I'm still learning every time I pick the thing up... I think thats what keeps me interested... :)

I'm probably showing my age, but my favorite guitar tune is "Maria Elena" by Los Indios Tabejeros. By the way, do you musicians know what a Polish gentleman is? It's a Pole who CAN play the accordian, but dosn't.

Yah, I like EVERYTHING everyone has listed, artists and instruments...

Another Strat player here. I'm down to bare essentials in my old age: I'm down to the strat, a Peavey studio (Backstage) amp, an old Yamaha six string acoustic. I play everything from Beatles to Skynyrd, Pink Floyd to Grateful Dead, Merle Haggard to Smokey Robinson, Wilson Picket to Lenny Kravitz. Basically rock, blues, country, motown, progressive, jazz... whatever a fellow jammer wants to play and is willing to teach me. Never have a bad time playing, as little as I play anymore.

The thing that ticks me off is I've been playing for more than 20 years, and I still can't consistantly play like Eric Clapton did when he was 20... says a lot about how much I wish I was more talanted at slinging the ax... gotta keep that friggin' day job

You said it Raghauler.. As long as it's good I don't care who it is.. I was brought up on Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson and all that country stuff in the 70's.. I'll play anything and everything as long as it's real music, not this garbage these kids are playin today.. These kids use the instrument as a crude noise maker, not a refined instrument for making music.. Makes me sick... :(

Don't play guitar, but did play a tuba in school band! How about tennis raquet after a few beers, does that count?

After thinking about this for awhile, decided that the greatest rock and roll song of all time was "Layla" by Eric Clapton. Any disagreement? Ha.

Re: Any guitar pickers around??..

Ditto on "Layla" Jack Shellac...Eric, I mean Derek and the Dominos recorded that album right down the road from me in Miami... That entire album is great... Eric Clapton and Duane Allman...A pair that can beat a full house anyday... Too bad Duane is gone though.. Wish he was still around.. Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan too.. Just imagine what they might have done had they not checked out so early in their lives..

Noticing who some of you folks like (SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, etc.), I was wondering if you have checked out Kenny Wayne Sheppard? He is compared, unfairly, to Stevie often. However unfair the comparison may be for a younger guy he is really an excellent player.

I can't think of his name right now but another older guy who was very good was the guy from Procul Harum.

88spl, good to know I'm not the only one out here who played the Tuba. That is actually how I got my start in music.

Re: Any guitar pickers around??..

Dale T: Robin Trower was the guitar player for Procol Harum..Never could get into his stuff though.. I have a disc by Kenny Wayne Sheppard... He's pretty good. I guess I can say that, cause I stink but I'm having fun anyway.. He's definatly been influinced by Stevie... Your right about comparing Kenny with Stevie, but he has no problem holding his own with the big guys...
If there was a question about who the worst player was, I'd win that one hands down..LOL... :D

Snapperbait got me to thinking about the album "Layla". Started looking for and and found at Amazon.com. You can get a remastered CD for $14. Got it today and every track is GREAT. I had forgotten how good they all were.

Hey Jack Shellac... "I Looked Away" and "Thorn Tree in the Garden" are my favorite tracks on the CD....

FYI.. Tom Dowd, the producer of the Layla album, passed away a couple days ago... :( Mr. Dowd was one of the true Great Producers of all time.... The music industry will truly miss him...

Was playin' with the Guys last night at our usual wednesday night session and it got me to thinking about this thread I started a while ago... Thought I'd bump this up to see if maybe any of the newer forum members are guitar junkies like me...

Re: Any guitar pickers around??..

I play a little guitar.It's about 4" long. ;)
My son has passed me up in the lightning finger dept. You think Laylas hard to pick clean, try a few rifts of "reeling in the years" by Steely Dan or some of the early Ten Years After.I stick with the slower Zeppelin tunes along with stuff like Taylor,Croce,Dylan,Byrds, and the like.My son has taught me some bits and pieces of "under the bridge" from Red Hot Chile Peppers and leaves me in the dirt on the rest.Guitar is like a bicycle ,you never forget how to ride it,you just forget how to ride it well without practice.
Favorite guitarist:Lindsey Buckingham
