I am starting my first mercarb (an carb for that matter) rebuild. I was curious if there was a trick for removing old gasket material?

Thanks in advance...

It is best to use either a putty knife or a gasket scraper. The gasket scraper is a very good tool, but could scratch the aluminum parts. Wire wheel works for those that are really stuck, but be very very careful. I usually use a putty knife or my pocket knife.

I use a utility knife blade, but you need to make sure that you don't scrape the aluminum. Gasket remover can loosen the hard stuck material but it leaves a bit of a mess to clean up after.

Roloc bristle discs. They work great.
