Any Fix For Holes in the Hood

I got a pretty cheap motor and I am in the process of fixing up the motor. It was not overly well taken care of and as you can see from the picture my hood has a nice size hole in it.

Is there any bonding material or patch that can fix these things. I would rather avoid grey duck tape (white duck tape if there is any is an option). Anyone repaired one of these or have any ideas.

If I bought a new one, anyone know what hoods would fit a 1976 15Hp Evinrude.

Get a fiberglass repair kit...seen them at wally world...lay the mat on the inside...form it to fit the contores....make sure you ruff the inside up a little and it clean of any oil or grease..use prep-sol...

then after the glass has set up...get a small can of body filler...something like Gorilla Hair..it has glass fiber in it...ruff up the outer surface..and again make sure its oil free..so wipe it good with the solvent....lay a thin coat of the filler on outside...sand it smooth to the cowl material level...then prime and pint....

If you build it up with alternating layers of fiberglass and stick epoxy or two part epoxy, it will be as strong as new. Finish with two part and sand it smooth using a sanding block. Hardware stores or auto parts stores should have what you will need.

74-76 will fit (if you want the same generation, 77+ will also work), I was faced with the same issue with that exact same motor, my bodyman father fibreglassed it and sanded it down and now it looks like new.

as mentioned ,fibreglass resin, get a small can,1/2 pint if you can ,as said, patch on inside, hen ,also buy ,cabosil, its ground op fiberglass ,you can mix it with the resin and that will help you to make a filler for the outside, this way your only buying a small bit of resin.and a small bag of the cabolsi ,which is very cheap. After it sets ,you can sand to form

Thanks a lot everyone. I didn't actually think it was repairable but I am sure glad I decided to ask the experts anyways. I picked up a fibreglass repair kit for $13 bucks and if my work is not too embarassing I will post an "after" pic to go with the "before" pic above.

Thanks again.

Re: Any Fix For Holes in the Hood

You guys are great. I didn't think an outboard's hood was repairable. Anyway I promised an after shot for anyone interested. Keep in mind this was my first fibreglass repair job. I used a Bondo brand fibreglass repair kit. I would recommend anyone doing this to obtain a large number of disposible gloves, since it is a sticky job. You also need some 80 grit sandpaper and a lot of effort on the part of the sander.

Below are my before and after shots. Due to the nature of the damage I lost a little bit of the Evinrude decal during the paint job, but at least the hole is gone and it can now handle some rain and water spray better than it could before.

Thanks again for the advice.
