I don't go to Catalina much anymore, but it's an awesome little island with clear, but cold water to dive & snorkel in. The fishing is usually good too.
There are many places to set up a tent unless you plan on camping on the boat. In that case there are many mooring sites. I like 2 Harbors myself because it's a small, friendly resort that makes you feel like you're farther than 26 miles off the mainland. We usually launched at Long Beach or Newport Harbor and stayed on the string line for $24/night.
