I got a 1968 Evi 100 hp if great condition (in a barn for 30 years). Are most / all of the parts interchanged with the same "model" Johnson? Looks the same to me. Is this like Chevy / GMC?

Thanks

Yes, other than paint.

Yup, they're like GMC. In fact, there are thousands and thousands of "JohnnyRudes" (hybrid motors) kicking around. I have one out in my yard right now - a '73 Johnson 135 gearcase and midsection, with an 85hp Evinrude powerhead and hood on it.

Once I get a chance to check the powerhead out, I will make a decision on rolling with it, or finding a 135 powerhead to put on the motor.

What you have just discovered, is exactly why many of us love old OMC motors.

Johny/Rudes became the same back in the mid 50's. That was about the time when they were totally incorporated. Paint and a few other cosmetics were all the differences they had.

Thanks guys.

Amazed at how many old motors are laying around in barns all over Montana. Just gotta go get 'em. The old man who gave it to me asked that I take him and his wife fishing some time this summer. That's a deal. He was a mechanic, bought it one season after it was new, and has less than 100 hours on it -- maybe 50. He wrapped it in plastic and old carpet and left it there since 1972. Paint looks like new.

When they are assembled, they were tested for ease of starting

If it started on the first pull, it was painted blue and given the name "Evinrude".

If it started on the 3rd pull, it was painted green and called "Johnson".

If it took more than 3 pulls, it was painted white and called "Gale or Buccaneer".
