After i service my lower unit,I may buy a "newer"
motor (1975 50 hp now)Are there any year/models that I should avoid? I am looking at a 1978 140 hp, but think it my be too heavy and too much power for my 15' starcraft. Any thoughts?
Hi, Medic.

Your Starcraft would love one of the JohnnyRude triple looper engines in 65 to 75hp built after about 1985 and before 1997 (for prop rating). Like the 50hp twin looper you have now they were years ahead of their time.

Be sure, first, that your boat is rated for whatever hp you want to put on it.

That big, heavy, thirsty crossflow 140 is altogether too much engine for that boat.

All engines built by OMC in the late 90s were originally suspect for QC problems. If they have been in regular use any of those problems have probably been fixed by now.

Good luck.
Hey Medic! What hull do you have? I've got a '77 Starcraft 15-foot American and it handles beautifully with a 75hp OMC triple. Just fast enough for thrills, but it doesn't drink gas like the V4s...
- Scott
prop shaft ratings began " OFFICIALLY" in 1986.

some manufactureres were doing it themselves before this by a few years, but 1986 was the year that EVERYBODY had to do it.
hey chinewalker what kinda gas useage are you getting from that 75hp triple? I'm looking to trade up to 60-75hp on my 16' cabin boat and I'm kinda concerned about how much it'll cost to run-bearing in mind I'm paying equivalent of about $6 a gallon in the UK for gas...
