Hey All,
First let me introduce myself. My name is Jim (friends call me Big Jim), and I am glad to have found this forum and this is my first post, so hello!

Anyhow, I just aquired a Sears "Electric Fishing Motor" Model 5982 along with the owners/parts manual and want to know about how old it is and any other information on it (value?).

I just "inherited" it and and have not tested it to see if works, but I am told it was hardly used in "it's day".

Thank you in advance for your help.
Big Jim:confused:

My suggestion would be to call a Sears Sevice Center. They would likely have an archive they can reference.

If its old I would check the shaft seal behind the propeller as this may have hardened..rule No 1 is dont run it out of water as this burns up the shaft seal..

We arrived home this afternoon and after unpacking the truck I hooked the motor up to my "regular trolling motor" battery and flipped the switch and it runs!
I didn't have it immersed in water when testing it, but it was a very short test (I wished I had looked on here beforehand).
I will give Sears a call and check to see what vintage of the motor is.

Well I learned something today so I guess it wasn't a total loss.
"Old" a more proper term?
Thanks for the info.

You are in error. Before you correct someone, at least be sure you have done your research and are yourself correct.

Vintage is a term that means period of origin or age. It is definately not limited to pre-1930. Other references deal with the age of wine, even then they do not limit the time to the 1930's.

Here are two references that do not agree with you. Can you supply any revlevant one that do support your viewpoint?

On a more important topic... Welcome to Big Jim.

I found a trolling motor at the local thrift store a couple weeks ago. Don't remember the brand, but it was sea foam green. :) I almost paid the $25 for it just because it looked cool, though all the wiring was frayed.
Not to mention the motor mounted at the bottom had to have weighed 35lbs!
