A friend found his rod at a garage sale and I am not sure what it was used for. My best guess is as a "mudder" to stir up the bottom. The reel has the name "Californian" on it and those are chains hanging at the end of the line.

It's an ice fishing rod with a fly reel attached. The chain looks like a homemade lure retriever.

that's even weirder than I thought. I would've never though about ice fishing being down here in FL. So the chains are designed to snag a lure that may have been lost? I guess it makes sense considering you can't swim under the ice.

It might be an ice fishing rod but I think it's a stretch about it being a lure retriever. Thanks for your input.

I would not be so quick to dismiss the lure retriever id. "Chain" type lure retrievers have been popular for years.
Look familiar?

Not perfect but very similar except for the piece that looks like a bobber with a hook or two on it. Thanks.

That is what i was talking about. The eyes guide it down the line to the lure. They used the ice fishinf rod for portability.

Re: Antique fishing pole

The reel is similar to a type of reel used here in Michigan, for steelhead fishing. They call them "center pin" reels. If they have it on a short rod using the chains, they may be used to stir up the bottom, we we do that here when out perch fishing through the ice. Raise and lower the rod to let the chains stir the sand, usually perch will come flying into view to investigate. This is just a guess based on what it looks like in your picture.
