Antifouling Paint Question

I am planning on fixing a few digs (not deep) on my boat that occurred when it broke loose last year off the docks. I am going to fiberglass the digs/sand and then gel coat. I on the bottom part I would like to use antifouling paint. It previously had antifouling paint on it but looks like it hasn't been done in a long time and I am not sure what they previously used. I have never applied antifouling paint to any of my boats. I was hoping someone could provide me with the type of paint I should be looking to buy and whether or not I need to apply barrier coat. And maybe instructions for applications of this bottomcoat. This boat has a fiberglass hull, and it is kept in the water all summer on Lake Champlain (cold waters) in Northern New York.. Please let me know what suggestions or advice is on fixing the fiberglass/gel coat/bottomcoat. Thanks

Re: Antifouling Paint Question

Year, Manufacturer, & Size would be helpful. You probably should put a barrier coat on, but removal of the old paint is necessary to do it correctly. If it is a large boat this could be an issue.

Some manufacturers have a blistering problem - others not. The easiest solution would to lightly sand the existing paint and recoat with a hard (non-ablative) antifouling paint.

Wear a good respirator while sanding and cleaning up. You want to be an old boater, knowing that you are enjoying being an old boater. Breathing bottom paint dust might stop you from doing this.
