I have searched & couldn't find anything regarding this so I am posting new.
I recently won an ebay auction for a used MotorGuide 736 bow mount trolling motor to replace the dead one that came with the boat.
I unfortunatly have to keep the boat in a covered car port at my apartment. Me being the worry-wort I am, am afraid someone will steal it. It seems like an easy target.
I do have a good canvas cover to cover the boat but thats the only thing other than a few bolts keeping someone from stealing it.
Is there any tips or hints you could provide to at least make the job of stealing it a bit more difficult.
Thanks for any help you can give.

(off topic, heres theLink to the motor. Did I do alright? I have no idea what they cost new :) I paid $25 to ship to me.

great deal wanna sell your old 1 i am lookin to make mine bow maountable it dont matter that it does not work i only need the mounting peices. let me know. anyway u can use allen head screws to mount it that will make it alittle harder but trust me if they want it. it will be gone. some times its better to just let them take it then for them to break up your boat trying to get it off

I know this is a bit of a hassle but I take mine off after using. For mine Minkota, I just unscrew the knob and take the motor off.

If you can get access to the back side of the mounting area, mount with thru-bolts, backing plates and fiber-lock nuts to keep it securely in position. If not, use theft-resistant hardware like one-way screws (like thise used on partitions in public bathrooms) or specialty-head bolts that require special heads to tighten or loosen. Something like this, but better suited for the marine environment. http://www.tufnut.com/category.aspx?id=2

Re: Anti-Theft Devices for Trolling Motor?

I think I have my problem solved.
I got the motor yesterday. It works great. Love ebay...
Anyways....
Like Mr T said, mine also has sort of a quick release feature where the motor itself is quickly removeable from the base. My old (I mean OLD)motorguide base wasn't like this one.
So I'll just pull the motor when I am through. Shouldn't take but a few minutes & will save me some worryin' (well, I'll have to worry about 'em stealing the base :p )

p.s. Wayne. I'll get back to you about the old base.
