Sanding down out drive and preparing it for paint. Will sand then cover with outdrive paint. Once dry I will then cover with anti fouling paint (as it in salt water). Should the whole drive be covered with the antifouling paint or just that area in water ? Is there a particular anti-fouling paint recommended for MerCruiser Out Drives?

there was but you cant by it now."Alumacoat".all you can get is the spray can stuff. comes black and clear.$$$$$. DO NOT use regular bottom paint because if theres copper in it the drive will disolve away.

Caught me in the nick of time! I was just about to do that.
I take it that the same rules apply to "docked in fresh water?"

You can use Trilux from interlux (but you must use their Primocon primer first) or Pettit has a product (Vivid) that can be used on outdrives too. Be aware that both have a form of copper in them (not the same as regular bottom paint copper) and the drive has to be insulated from it by the use of their special primers. There is no more tin based antifouling like Micron 33 or Alumaspray. In fresh water if you don't get growth why use antifouling? Just give it a good coat of reglar outdrive paint.

It gets growth in fresh water, probubly not the same as salt though. The boat stays in all season.

I used the Trilux and Primocon primer.........

Paint the entire O/D and gimble housing....

Works good.

Do you paint the s/s hardware, hoses etc ? Trilux is intended for aluminum only I believe. Do you mask everything not aluminum? How about the prop? Any other advice or cautions?

I didn't paint the hoses..........or the prop.

My logic about the hoses and related hardware is that they don't come painted from the factory...

Paint will wear off the prop anyway.

Re: Anti -fouling Paint on Out Drive

What about galvanic corrosion? Would painting the s/s reduce or increase it? I read somewhere that it would be actually be better to paint all s/s below the waterline and leave the aluminum drive unpainted but it is not done for purely aesthetic reasons. I guess where I am trying to get to is just what the heck should I paint and what I SHOULD NOT paint for the best anti-foul and corrosion protection? I would assume Trilux prop and drive would not adhere to the s/s in any event so painting over it (even intentionally) would not have much effect.
