Another trim unit question.

Are 3cylinder and V-4 trim units interchangeable? I’ve been looking on ebay for a tilt/trim unit for a 1980 70hp Johnson. Some sellers claim that their units off a V-4 will fit, others say it won’t. Both the 3 cyl & V-4 units appear to attach with 6 bolts, what’s the difference in them?

Re: Another trim unit question.

The PTT assembly on a 1980 70hp Johnson/Evinrude with a 20" shaft is the same PTT unit as on any of the 1980 v4 units.

Any difference between the two (3cyl/4cyl) would come into play ONLY if the 1980 70hp was a 15" shaft model. The 15" shaft 3 cylinder model has different type transom brackets etc whereas it requires the older style PTT unit that has the lift cylinders on the outside portion of the transom brackets.
