If you put the zero mark on the balancer dead on the zero (I think its zero) tab mark is that with out a doubt TDC? Or can it also be an exhaust stroke of the piston?
Or should the zero be on the eight degree mark?
This is before the engine is running.

Re: Another timing question

Yes, when the mark on the balancer is on 0* that is T.D.C. However you need to verify that is on cylinder #1.....And to do that you have to go through the procedure that was outlined on the other post.....Don S. says that it can only go in one way on your rig, so.....I think you have another issue that needs to be addressed....Timing gears out of whack somehow? Don S. has volumes of Volvo knowledge...... I would listen to his advice....JK

You MUST be on the compression stroke, or the engine will not run.
To find #1 TDC on the compression stroke, remove the spark plugs (It's easier with them all out when doing this the first time), and crank the engine over by BUMPING the starter or a remote start button. put your finger over the #1 sparkplug hole. When you feel compression building, continue turning the engine by hand, not with the starter till the mark on the harmonic balancer is lined up with the 0 mark on the tab. Put in the distributor with the rotor pointing to #1 spark plug wire.

Re: Another timing question

Worked like a charm. Thnx guys. Now another question. The engine is running fine but I havnt fine tuned it yet with my timing light. I purchased a new carb for it, should I install the carb before tuning in the timing or will it not matter?
Thnx again.

It Probably won't change a Thing,........

But,.......
You should do All the Changing there's Going to Be,........
Before the Final Tuning............

Re: Another timing question

If it's running now, set the timing. Then make changes, reset timing and or do the tuneup. An additional step, but I always take advantage of a running engine...fewer things to diagnose if the engine won't start after replacing carb, etc.
