another tach question

76 merc 850, original tach not working. What do I need to look for when buying a new tach? Also wiring connections, is the plug in the front of the control box ok for the tach connection? Thanks

A little more info.. I would like to use the original tach, an airguide, it has 2 wires, white and black. it has no light. Can anyone tell me how this is wired? Its a 0-6000 only markings on it on the back in yellow is 4cf or 4gf. Thanks
