I successfully replaced my impeller and associated parts last night. I was mostly worried about the shaft being seized, but it came off no problems at all. You just never know if the last owner performed regular service or not.

My old impeller didn't look that bad:

...but I replaced it anyway:

The gear lube looked to be in good shape. The previous owner told me he replaced it recently, and I would say he did. Neither of the gearcase plugs had rubber o-rings on them and I want to make sure I put it back like it is suppose to be. The impeller kit came with a couple of pieces that appear to be about the right size to go over the plugs, but look like they are made out of gasket material, not rubber.

Are these what I am suppose to use on the plug screws, or should I pick up a couple of rubber o-rings from my local Merc dealer?

Hiya,

Congrat's on your success. To me, that old impeller looks like it's done (doesn't look fine). It's taken a set, and there are big flat wear spots on the ends of the vanes. Definately good that you changed it out.

As for the gaskets, if they fit your plugs right, I'd use the new seals (blue gasket type) instead of o-rings. It could be that there were different plugs made that at some point that took o-rings, but I doubt it. My guess is someone changed them with what they had on hand. If you go to dealer and ask for the right gaskets, I think he'll sell you more of the washer/gasket type. By the way, if one of your plugs has a magnet built in, it goes on the bottom (drain/fill hole). If not, you might consider buying one that's magnetic next time you're in the dealership... it picks up small filings and keeps them out of the bearings and is handy for you to get a quick idea of the health of your lower unit.

take care,

Brent

The 'o'rings in the plugs was only ever used by OMC (Johnson and Evinrude). The gasket looking pieces are the right ones for your Merc.

Well done and keep posting.

Chris...........

The fill/drain screws have plastic seals. Either Blue, Black or Red. They don't normally come on in the W/P kit. You buy them loose. Your motor looks younger than 1978 by that Dirve shaft (Stainless) that's one reason why it wasn't seized.

Hummm..well according to the serail number on the title and the colors and shapes of the stripes, it seems to be a 1976. Stainless is good nevertheless. Is there someplace over the cowling that I can find the serial number stamped on the motor (without removing stuff to see it)?

The w/p kit sure did come with two washers that fit perfectly over the drain and vent screws, so I used them. They seem tight and leak free.

I had to drop the unit a tab again last night to adjust the shift shaft as it would disengage, but got that straightened out no problem.

I cranked her up after work tonight using the muffs to ensure I had the shifting correct. Worked great. I wanted to ensure the pump was workiing properly, but don't have a container the right size and shape to submerge the LU. It did circulate water with the muffs, but I realize that is under pressure from the hose and is not a true sign. I am confident it will be fine though.

I also adjust the manual trim pin in one more notch as last time out the boat seemed to porpoise a little.

I am anxious to go out Saturday. It is suppose to be sunny and about 78 degrees. I'm going fishing at Patoka lake in southern Indiana. Haven't been there before, but it is very similar to the reservoir I grew up on, Barren River Lake in Kentucky.
