As some of you know, I had the flywheel off on Saturday, 25hp evinrude 1972,to re-align coils. Went hunting this a.m., motor started easy, 3rd pull. Ran fine there and back, about 20min. ride each way. When I went to leave hunting today, I noticed the manual started rope came way out. So when I get home, I pull hood off and it looks like metal shavings inside. O Boy, more fun. The center bolt that holds the spring in place in the very center of started came out. The flywheel was also rubbing on the outer edge of the bottom of the starter. What it looks like to me is the bolt on the starter and the torque nut that holds on the flywheel must have been on each other. So the $64,000 question is, what did I do wrong? Is it possibe to put starter on to tight?

I'm so tired of have problems everytime out. I ready to buy a newer motor, but after being on this forum, there's seems to be no guarantee how new your motor is. I'm just getting frustrated.:(

Re: Another problem

No need to trash the motor because something wasn't assembled correctly.

It sounds like you are saying the recoil starter came apart. There is no excuse for that if the last guy to have it apart assembled it correctly and tightened all the fasteners. If the hub did come loose in the starter, put it back together correctly and make sure everything is tight. As I recall there is a locknut on top of the spindle bolt (?)

Re: Another problem

I am trying everything I can to make this a good motor and it is. It ran a little rough at low idle coming back in, so I bought a 3 gallon new gas tank and seafoam to decarb it. I think that deep creep never got everything out. It use to run smooth at low idle before I deep creeped it. The plugs were brand new this a.m. I was so happy this morning when it started so easy.

I've never had the recoil apart, but someone must have done something wrong. There was a allen topped bolt and washer holding the center hub in place. I tryed to screw it back in and it won't go back in. It looks like the very top of the threads in the recoil are stripped out. The bolt threads looked ok.

I have another recoil with the same part # off a 20hp 1970 johnson. Is it ok to put this one on? Did the bolt coming out cause the bottom of the recoil and the and flywheel to rub?

Thanks for all your help F_R

Where is there supposed to be a locknut?

Pretty sure the Allen bolt/screw is not stock. Sounds like it may not have been long enough and may not be the right threads. If it will thread in without the center hub in place then maybe just replacing it with the correct bolt will solve your problem. If so, I'd recommend some thread lock to help ensure it stays put. Otherwise, you may have to try a heli-coil insert or tap the hole out larger.

Re: Another problem

Maybe the bolt broke. I did get it to thread thru. But it's not long enough for a lock washer to be on top. The other spare I put on it the threads do go thru the top of the recoil, but no lock nut on it. Should i put one on?

Re: Another problem

I just checked, that one did have a lock nut on top. Some did, some didn't. It was a thin nut.

While you are at it, look to see if there is a pin in the inner end of the spindle, fitting into a matching hole in the housing. That pin keeps the spindle from trying to rotate with the pulley, which might tend to unscrew the bolt. Again, some had it, some didn't.

In any case, it shouldn't be coming apart on you. They made millions of them that held together. Yes, if it were to come apart it would drop down against the flywheel.

You can see an exploded diagram of your motor at http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E
