hello again got water temp guage but cant get it to work right. engine is 60hp merc 1993. put purple wire on the i terminal, tan wire on S term, black wire on G term. the guage went straight to hot when i put the ignition on with very cold engine  . tried the tan/blue wire and that made the horn sound. what is wrong ?. on the engine i can only see a tan/blue wire on cylinder head so where the tan wire is fitted i dont know. do i need a seperate sender and if so where does it go. please help as stupidly ive already cut the hole in the dash for this clock to be fitted. also should the horn sound when i first switch on ignition as mine dont make any noise. it did once when running when the muffs fell off but was switched off straght away.

Sounds like your hooking it up to the overheat switch.... That's probably where the tan blue wire is going...

And yes you will have to install the sender where the brass plug is...
