Another OMC Trim Problem

I have a 1978 305 Chev OMC with 800 series outdrive. My trim motor (front of engine) was not working but when I used the trim button on the shifter I could hear a clicking in the solenoids. I repaired the 12 V and it was working fine on the bench however once installed there was no clicking in solenoids and no response from the shifter. Checked for the fuses but can't find any by the starter. Are they at the top starboard side of the engine? If so what do they look like?Took a screw driver and touched the two screws on solenoid and the motor went up/down however still no luck with the trim button???

2. After not leaving well enough alone the 12 V wire came off in the trim motor so that meant taking the trim motor out again. After loosening the last of the bolts on the trim motor this time the engine came crashing down and now I can't move the engine up or down using the nut ontop of the housing. The bottom of the gears is only 2 inches from the bottom of the boat and there is no way to move the engine up.

I have gone through the reviews for the past year and still can't find the answer for my situation.

Getting frustrated......

Any ideas....

Re: Another OMC Trim Problem

Note sure if it's the same layout, but on my '83 Stringer the 2 main 50-amp fuses are in a pair of rubber boots, attached to a bracket on the Starboard top of the engine. They look like wire connectors. There are some little wire gizmos to hold the connectors together so they don't vibrate apart.

It's really easy to blow one while working on the engine, I keep a 5-pak on board. Also, it takes both fuses to run the tilt; one feeds the solenoid activation circuit (via the switch up front), the other feeds the high-amp side of the solenoid. So if you have clicking (solenoids are energizing) but not tilting, you may have 1 of them blown.

But you may have a completely different set up as it's a couple of years older.

Good luck..

Tom

Re: Another OMC Trim Problem

Thanks Tom,

I've looked at the two "wire connectors"/fuses as you've described and mine are in the same area. One is approx. 1 inch in diameter and the other about 1/2 inch. They do have the metal snap wires to hold them together and I did pull them apart. I don't see any type of fuse. Is the whole thing a fuse?? When its apart all I see is a male end with five or six pins that fit into the female end. Is there something more to take apart and if so what?

Thanks in advance,
Jason
