Another OMC 230/800 Tilt Problem

Hi,
I am in the process of "restoring" my 1979 Slickcraft and am having a problem with the tilt. I keep burning the 50 amp fuse when I engage the tilt. This fuse also kills the starter as the starter solenoid is linked in.
I have taken out the tilt motor and it work both ways when plugged directly to the battery. When connected to the harness it blows the fuse.

I have new selenoids to replace the old ones - but before doing so wanted to confirm that one of the solenoids could be the problem. Does this seem the right cure, or should I look for something else?

Denis,
Sounds like the gear case is locked up. Not uncommon. Remove the quadrant gear, the pinion gear, and the four screws holding the cover on. The cover will be difficult to remove. But I think you'll find that water has penetrated the seal and rusted the worm gears and clutch pack together.

I've already done that. The drive went up and down manually without a problem before I re-installed the tilt motor. Have not checked that it still does with the motor in. Will do that tonight.

Just a thought here but to blow the fuse you will need to exceed the fuse amperage.
A binding motor or tilt mech will not cause this unless you are holding the switch up for quite a long time. I have had the cover on to tight which bound up the clutch mech tight and it did not blow the fuse.

More than likely it is a short in the electrical circuit for the tilt motor, crossed wires or a solenoid would be my guess. You can test the solenoids indepently before you replace them...
