Another Gas Guage question

I replaced a motor on a 20ft see pro.. After the replacement, my gas guage would barley move to over the empty line. I replaced the guage and had the exact same problem. I took the boat in and had the sending unit replaced. When I got it home, I turned the key on, and once again the guage would just go over the empty line. It is a 75 gallon tank and I thought maybe they had to empty the tank to work on it. I put in 17 gallons and topped off the tank and same problem.
could the original sending unit have damaged the new guage that a bought? Should I buy another guage or just load up the boat and take it back to the shop that replaced the sending unit? Maybe there is someting else that I missed? I hope you can help. Thank guys,

Re: Another Gas Guage question

Matt
I not sure I can really help. First did the shop give you the old sending unit, I always ask for old parts?? How sure are you that they actually changed it?? I would start by grounding sending unit wire at tank and watching guage. I would check all ground wires, ground from tank to battery or engine block, ground wire to guage. Also make sure have 12 volts to guage. You can check the guage. Should have 12 volts on one side of the guage and if ground the other side should more all the way up.

Re: Another Gas Guage question

Hi Matt
Boatist is correct about first grounding the sending wire to the gauge. First check the ground to the Tank as suggested(Might not have good ground after the engine was changed). Hook up a jumper wire(so as to ground away from the Tank) to the sender wire and with the key in the "ON" position, ground it to the engine block. The gauge should go to "FULL". If it doesn't, the gauge or wiring between the tank and the Gauge is bad. If it does, the sender is bad and should be replaced(If they already have done so, take it back and make sure it's a new sending unit.)

Matt....the info from the others above Teleflex Tech Support is very good, in addition to it here a website that has some good trouble shooting steps and pictures for various electrical type problems
