I have a 88 Force 125.My tilt/trim has been leaking down slowly for some time.I have done a search and read all the posts.I haven't been that worried about fixing it until winter,Because it has still been working fine. Until today.I was running W.O.T. and the engine just dropped suddenly. Not all the way but enough to make me go from 5000 r.p.m to 3900 r.p.m. Now it won't trim up but to the 3900 r.p.m. range. It seem to try to go all the way but you can feel it bump and fall back to the 3900 r.p.m position. Also it works fine when not moving it goes all the way. when your stoped. How do I check the fluid? I don't see any leaks, but I thought I could check it first. Please Help.

Should be a screw on the top of the pump. Sounds like it is low on fluid

There are 2 screws on top of the trim motor and a nickel sized thumb screw 3/4 of the way down on the side.

Hey pwilson
I have the same motor in the '87 version. The thumb screw on the side is the filler hole. Also this set up has a tilt and a seperate trim piston. I think I have been told that these units are designed to not ride on the tilt piston, only on the trim. So if you had the motor tilted farther than you thought and hit the gas it may have just dropped to the trim position. Maybe someone with more knowledge can shed some more light.

Good Luck

I checked the fluid. I opened the thumb screw and fluid came out I guess that means its full.I don't know what to do next.

1100 rpm drop just by lowering the motor? Seems like a lot to me. More than I've ever seen on a normal motor. Seems to me that something else may also be happening here.

How long have you had this motor?
Has it always run in this manner?
Have you checked the compression lately?
Seems like with the full load and resistance of having the prop in the water, that you are dropping way too many rpm, like you have a weak cylinder.

I've had the motor for about 4 years. The problem is in the tilt trim. It just won't trim up all the way to allow me to get the extra 1100 r.p.m.'s The engine is on a 19' Bass boat.Wide open on my boat is 5000 r.p.m. trimed all the way up.Now with the motor only trimming 3/4 of the way up I can't get but 3900 r.p.m.It just won't come up to full trim. Therefore I'm lossing about 10 mph. and 1100 r.p.m.'s

Maybe I can put some VIAGRA in the gas tank. :D Seriously though I wish I knew how to fix this problem.I need the extra speed for bass turnaments, and I sure don't want it to get worse.

My computer is down, and I only get to use this one about once a week. I would replace the seals on the check valves first. The valves are behind a snapring or allen head screw, 2 valves one in front, one in rear of pump body. IF snapring type, remove one snapring and blow the valve out with the pump pressure. After the valve is out remove the 2 o-rings and you should see the aluminum cap on the end of the valve, pry the cap off with screwdriver wrapped in a rag, if you mar the cap sand with sand paper. It helps to heat the valve in hot water, after the cap is off you can see the small valve, looks like a float needle. Clean off old seal install new seal PN 820719 from Merc dealer. Replace aluminum cap reinstall valve. When you have the valve out of the pump, check the shuttle valve which is between the 2 check valves for free movement.

Clanton when I was removing the pump to change the pilot seals I notice that the ring around the trim cylinder is loose. Also one of the screws is bent and loose too.You can slide that outer ring on the tilt cyl. up and down with your hand. It looks like that screw was bent somehow .What should I do about this.

fixed pilot valve seals with a briggs and stratton o rings. perfect fit. stripped hydrolualic line but bought used pump and replaced stripped one, i also used plumbers tape when threading the hydrolualic lines. be careful about cross threading the hydolualic lines when replacing pump. hanks for your help.

Im not sure which ring you are talking about, but the steel band/ring at the top of the cylinder is held in place with the hyd fitting and sealed with an o-ring on the end of the fitting. Dont over tighten or it will crush the cylinder, only low return hyd pressure on this fitting. The plumbers tape not needed, the flare on the hyd line does the sealing.
