Still workin on the Force 85 HP. Alright well we got the thing suckin water now we have a new prob. The thing goes through gas like crazy it seems..a little over 3 gallons in an hour. Thats goin around the around 20-25 the majority of the time, tubin. Also when going that speed, the engine will almost act like it's not firing on all cylinders all the time. All the sudden it will speed up or let off. But when going with the throttle all the way down, it doesn't seem to do that. Then it seems like it's running at full power, in between 35-40. This is a 85 Baylinder Capri by the way. When we got back today I checked the plugs and the bottom one was pretty black. Any suggestions?

p.s. Just noticed something strange..we've only had the boat a couple weeks and haven't really looked at the plugs. But when I took them out, it has L78V's while the engine calls for L20V's..was it just a model number change or did somebody screw up?

Sean

Re: Another Force question

The gas consumption sounds about right. I will go through about 3 or 4 gallons an hour with my 45 HP. I dont know about the L78V plugs. If it is speced out for L20V you should probably get a set of those and see if it improves the surging. This table says a force 85 is suppose to be UL18V spark plug chart

If you run that motor wide open, you can easily go thru 6+ gallons per hour.

Sounds like you have either a sparkplug/ignition problem, or a carb problem causing your surging.

It might be a good idea to have the carbs rebuilt and a sync 'n link done in the off season.

Re: Another Force question

We got some L18's for it and we'll be puttin those in. Don't know why the manual said L20's, hm. The guy at the place we got them told us the same thing, about the gas consumption. The only reason we were thinkin that it was kinda high, was somebody was telling us they only go through like 2 gallons an hour, with a 4 cylinder inboared..maybe cause it's a single carb, I dunno. Thanks for the help, we'll prolly be gettin the carbs worked on too like ya said, sittin for 4 years with that old gas in them couldn't help any.

Sean

Re: Another Force question

Inboard is most likely 4-stroke, much more efficient. Your consumption is about right.
