The following story is another example of why you should have a emergency kill switch and have it attached when under power.

mine is always attached, to the key ring on my boat keys. i would never hook it to myself call me insane, crazy, stupid. i dont care, only time i'd use one of those if i was on a jet ski or something similar that i had a chance to fall off.

my sister? 17 months is basically a year and half we took my nefew in them a few times as well as put him in a tube when we float down rivers. the key is a life jacket and contact. if your not holding him then grab him, i realize life jackets are only good to those who know how to use them. i/e if yor floating with your mouth in the water its not effective. but as long as you take it slow it wont be enjoyable, lets face it they cry... but it will be safe.

How old is that little fella in your signature picture? We all love to share or interests with our families and tragedies happens when things go very wrong and when we least expect them. Let these accidents be a reminder that we just entered the 101 critical days of Summer and do what we can to prevent injuries to the ones we love doing what we like to do!!

Don't remember when the pic was taken, but she was born in 2003 and I got the boat in 2008, so she's at least 5.

I'm pretty sure a full-size boat is much more stable than a kayak.

The Eskimo Roll, Capsize Swim Roll, and Self-Rescue Roll aren't standard manuevers for a typical pleasure boat, but they are for a kayak. Do you jump out of the kayak after doing one of the standard righting manuevers to look for the kid? Can't find that anywhere.

But hey, I wouldn't take my 17 month old on a motorcycle either, but plenty of people do that also.

In both cases, I just see it as Darwinism at work. There's a reason it's in the "Stupid Human Tricks" forum .....

i've owned my kayak for well over 4 years and never once got the urge to try that particular manuever and i dont think i will ever try it.

Hopefully you'll never have to. Unfortunately, it might not always be your choice. Kind of like a fire evacuation plan for your family if the house catches on fire. It's one of those things that if you happen to need it, you're going to need it REAL BAD RIGHT NOW and you'll wish you had learned it and practiced it beforehand.

But hey, if you don't think you'll need it, that's your choice. Just don't be surprised if we're reading about you in "Stupid Human Tricks" somewhere down the road ..... ;)
