hello all,
new to this great forum..

I too am trying to locate my mercruiser 260 engine numbers off a 79' sea ray 26ft weekender, so i can buy some
correct gaskets for my risers, since it was taken off due to a crack in it. I too could not locate the tag near the starter
but my carb. flame arrestor seem to have all the info. and if could you gurus out there which might be my engine serial
numbers off the flame arrestor. thanks.

regards.,
anthony

That's only the drive serial number, not the engine number.

Look down by the starter for the engine tag.

The tag even says "SternDrive" on it. Look up a sterndrive "Range" the numbers will be different, but it will still be in "The range"

Doesn't really make much difference, it's too old to look up by actual number, but would have liked to at least figured out a year of the engine with an engine serial number.

Just because the boat is a 79, doesn't mean the engine is, or the drive (which may have been a replacement).
After working as a marine tech at Mercruiser dealer ships for 20+ years, I've learned not to take everything at face value.

don, is correct. even though the flame arrestor says the stern drive number, i went to look at the serial number on the stern drive and it was different, so definitely it has been replaced.

with this 260/350 motor for the life of me, the log style manifolds really hide everything so its pretty difficult to locate the starter(which i know shouldn't be a big deal.) but that serial tag is really hard to get to, (bad back to really dig down under).

One of the main reasons that i desperatly seeking the serial numbers is that i would to buy parts online(cheaper prices) I did a called ' the anchor ' off reseda in the valley, been there before. they want me to bring my riser, so i can get the right gaskets for it. but the place is 65 miles away. hence the reasons for the serial number.
