Another engine alignment thread...

I have read most of the engine alignment threads already so my apologies for posting another thread on this topic.

I just had the transom replaced in my 1995 Four Winns (SX outdrive). This weekend we put the gimbal housing back on and dropped the motor in the boat. My alignment tool won't even come close to going into the engine coupler and when I look through the gimbal bearing it looks like the coupler needs to come down another 1/4" or so.

To get the back of the motor to come down that much it seems to me that the rear motor mounts on the inner transom plate are what need to be adjusted initially. But, I haven't seen anything in the service manuals or threads here that really focus on those mounts.

I guess my question is, is it common for those rear mounts to need to be adjusted that substantially?

I will try to get pics posted ASAP.

The rear mounts are not adjustable. If the coupler is a 1/4" high, make sure the square section of the mount is up inside the flywheel housing slot. I have seen them turned and the rear of the engine won't go down.

It could also be that the front of the engine is way too low. When you lift up on the front, the coupler will go down,.

The flywheel housing (position of the square nuts) was checked and it seems to be seating properly. If those rear mounts aren't adjustable I guess that answers my question. I will raise the motor up some more and see what that does for me. Thanks, Don!

If you moved the gimbal bearing, it may need to be centered as well. The inner portion of the gimbal bearing "Gimbals" inside the outer race.

Here is a picture of a couple gimbal bearing "Gimbaled" inside the outer race.

That's exactly what my problem was, Don. I just needed to change the angle of the inner race with my alignment tool. I appreciate your help!
