Last Friday the US government very quietly announced it was giving up control of the internet including ICANN and all IP/DNS supervision. Why? To many countries don't want the world's largest spy organization running the internet.
"The Washington Post cites Lawrence Strickling, a top Commerce Department official, as saying that "...a new oversight body must be created and win the trust of crucial stakeholders around the world." The Commerce Department also ruled out the United Nations for that role."
Hope this isn't considered as too political, I just hate that the US that created the internet (DARPA) and made all the investment is now in a position it has to give control away. sigh....
