Another Bearing Question

I think I have read just about everything about repacking bearings/ replacing bearings and have yet to find an answer to my question. I have replaced the bearings on one side of my trailer for a 14 ft. Jon boat and after assembling it all back together found that the wheel with replaced bearings is whole lot harder to spin than the wheel with the old bearings in it. The wheel spins and does not wobble yet it will only do about a turn and a half (while with the same approx. pressure put on the other tire it spins for about 3-4 turns at least). Also on other question on the bearings I replaced the outer bearing had no washer of any sort between the actual bearing and the nut with the cotter pin in it should I get one in there or is that normal.

Thanks

Kevin

Re: Another Bearing Question

You need the washer because the nut up against the bearing will put uneven pressure on the bearing

Re: Another Bearing Question

Ok thanks that is what I thought. Will the washer help loosen the wheel some or is it normal for the new bearings to be a bit tighter than old bearings just due to not being broken in?

Thanks for the help again

Kevin

Re: Another Bearing Question

I agree, You need the washer....
As for the resistence, Is your Bearing Preload the Same on Both sides ???
Did you Grease the Seal ????
Did you replace the bearings as Sets(Cup And Cone) ????

I'd go ahead + run it for awhile, Then Recheck the Preload......

Re: Another Bearing Question

You only have to preload the first time you tighten it down when you put in a new set of bearings.

I'd have to assume that you have the axle nut way to tight, but of course as already mentioned there will be uneven loading of the outer bearing if the washer is not used.

Here is alink to a article I wrote to tell you how to do the whole job, but there is a part about three quarters of the way thought that talks about getting the nut properly tightened.

web page

Re: Another Bearing Question

hey guys took apart the other side hoping there would be a washer but there was not. That leaves me with no washer on either hub. What size washer is it that you guys are talking about putting on between the nut and the spindle- if you could just explain the dimensions hopefully this is something I could pick up at a hardware store.

Thanks again for the help

Kevin Bardsley

Re: Another Bearing Question

You should be able to get it at any parts store. The washer ID is more than likely 1" but a common washer will not work. The OD is gonna be way too big. The correct washer will also probably have a tang on the inside that corresponds with a groove on your spindle. This tang keeps the washer from spinning with the bearing which would loosen/tighten the nut.

Re: Another Bearing Question

ThomVW thanks for the information. Thats a terrific artice. There are bearing packers at most auto places for around 10 dollars they work better than your hand method, my opinion, and you stay a little cleaner.

Re: Another Bearing Question

Glad you liked the article.

Those bearing packers are great. I left them out for a couple of reasons. The first is that I don't use them myself so I sort of forgot about them to tell the truth. The other is that I tend to think that some little things like packing the bearings is like driving a stick shift. There are tons of folks that don't know how that have been driving for years not, they've just never had to. So I figure that a guy who breaks down on the side of the road out in the south fourty acres of hell somewhere and just gets out of the auto parts store with a new bearing and a tub of grease and now he's playing mechanic with the Peterbuilts passing by at 70 three feet away, trailer swaying on the jack. You know what I mean. Anyway, you're dead right, those packers are a lot cleaner and to tell the truth for a person who hasn't been doint half their lives by hand the packer will do a better job.

Great suggestion.

ThomWV,

My computer states that the website users.westco.net page can not be displayed. This occurs with all references in other posts also. How may I obtain a copy of your document?? It sure has a good reputation for correctness etc...

Michael Lyons
