I'm reading about motor oil and they refer to OEM without first explaining what that means. What does it mean please?

I'm kind of old fashioned and my High School ( HS) English teacher (ET) would be proud. I don't use acronyms without saying what they mean nor will I use smiley face things to get my point across or explain how I feel. Not everyone can get their point across easily, I understand that. But please explain the acronym to us. If I say something that sounds stupid I may be trying to be humorous or I am saying something stupid. There is nothing wrong with using an acronym as long as the writer explains what it means and I do understand it makes the read easier later on. For example the writer wrote OEM without a definition and later wrote "National Marine Manufacturer Association, then added (NMMA). Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I don't have to Google the acronym and it makes the read smoother. But without explaining first I might not read what you wrote, ROTFLMAO LOL SYLD.

Please what is OEM?

Cant believe you've never heard or seen OEM used before reading a quart (Qt) of oil.

I try to LSNED: learn something new every day

Or at least try not to be shocked when I do

Original Equipment Manufacturer

For example,OEM oil isn't made by the auto makers, but it's what is put in the motor by the auto co., so it would be referred to as OEM oil. OEM replacement parts are supplied by the manufacturer or dealer network.

While we're throwing ack's out- NOS is often used in auto parts, and somewhat in boat parts. Means "New, Old Stock"-- old parts that are brand new, typically still in new factory packaging...

(also stands for 'Nitrous Oxide Systems', but that's another story)

That's funny as here in Canada they refer to "elite white Anglo Saxon" Canadians as "Old stock Canadians". Heck even auto correct here gives them a capital letter for Anglo Saxon. What English Royal BS. I don't know if you can tell I'm not a royalist. Something you Americuns got rid of. Actually I have dual citizenship, Mom is from Western NY.

So we had 14 responses but the acronym OEM has yet to be spelled out. Yes -- it has been described, but that's different. OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer.
