Another 35 HP Water Pump Problem

My 1983 Evinrude 35 HP needs an impeller change. I removed the four bolts and the one nut. Next the water intake screens were removed and the shaft disconnected. My problem is the unit will not drop down. I am at a loss as what to do. I have tapped with a heavy rubber hammer both front and back with no results. I would appreciate your advice as to my next move. Thank you in advance.

Behind the water intake screens where you disconnected the linkage, raise the upper nut up the shift shaft to expose the plastic keeper. Use your finger nail or small screwdriver to remove the keeper. It has a vertical slit in it that allows it to be removed. Then shift the motor into forward gear and remove the upper nut.
