Anode replacement?

Hi Guys;

I've just repainted my drive (AI,GII) and I am wondering how much contact with bare aluminum is required for the anodes to work. Under the front one, under the driveshaft, is completely painted and was before as well. Is contact through the bolts enugh or do I have to remove some paint?

Also, while I have your attention, I am doing impeller and pump gaskets. I don't have that little tool for putting that seal down on top of the pump. I know how to replace it ( pull up on the shaft, push the seal down onto the housing, release the shaft), but is that tool required. Can I use a large washer or something that one of you guys use.

I'll post some pictures of before and after when its complete.

Can we do attachment pictures yet?

Thanks,

Ken

To check the anodes, take a multimeter and attach one end to a ( good) known ground. Take the positive end and touch the anode in question and it should read 0 on the scale if it has a good contact.

Re: Anode replacement?

the bolt with the lock ring is sufficient for contact, just keep an eye on the anodes and replace them when worn - you will know if they are working if they fail instead of the finish on the drive

check to make sure all the grounding straps are attached and in good condition

an ohms test as described above will tell you if continuity has been achieved

there should have been a seal install tool in the impeller kit from merc

Re: Anode replacement?

If you use the star washer that comes with the anode kit, it will make contact for the anode. It digs into the paint.

The face seal tool for you impeller, comes in the OEM kit, and yes it is necessary. It controls how much the seal is pushed down against the housing. Too tight and it will wear out in a hurry, too loose and it won't do anything. Hit up your local dealer and see if they have them. Most Mercruiser techs have several in their tool box.

Pictures are still down, photobucket works.

Thanks Guys.

Which setting do I use on the meter

Ken

P.S. My Merc dealer said they didn't show an oem kit with the seal tool. Does anybody have a part number?

When I look that number up (47-43026q06), it shows that it is for a mercury 135/150/175 4-stroke Verado ....

Am I missing something?

My Bad!!!!

Thanks

I have just separated the upper from the lower and the shaft coming out of the top of the lower won't turn in either direction. The prop turns and locks against the dogs in the forward and reverse positions, but the drive shaft won't turn at all. Is this normal?

Re: Anode replacement?

The vertical shaft will turn hard due to the impeller being installed. Especially if you didn't lube the impeller with some dish soap (NOT grease). Also be sure you are turning the vertical shaft in a clockwise direction.

Re: Anode replacement?

Thanks Don:

This was before I took the pump off. After I posted that question I went out and took and took the pump of and it turned freely. First time having my Alpha apart, kinda scared me a little.

Sorry, but I like to ask first instead of break first... ask later.

Thanks again, I think I have everything under control now.lol
