Anode and motor trim tab question for 1988 johnson 200

I have a counter rotating motor used in a single motor application. I bought this engine and it had neither the trim tab fin nor the anode.

The C/R trim tab PN 0338743 costs much more than the regular one PN 0333961. Will the cheaper one fit/work since I am using it as a single motor?

My second question is about the anode. Do I just need PN 0393023 and a bolt to hold it in or is there something else that I need to get with it? Also some of the aftermarket anodes say aluminum and some dont. Is there and advantage to one versus the other?

Thanks

You must be running in saltwater? With a trimtab I never seen a motor with one,Is there a reason you believe you need one? the annode isnt nessary for fresh water,If your in salt any annode will be a advantage.I see the OEM annode is only 15 bucks it will install with no questions and the tab is 40 the other is 20 and crossreferences as OK.
You can go here enter the part numbers and on the right it will show what motors that part is acceptably on
http://search.boats.net/?r=t&q=0333961&x=21&y=13 Both cheaper parts fit your motor.

Please tell me that you are not saying that you have never seen a motor with a trim tab.

No sixmark I havent,I dont get many motors over 50HP their few,I am guessing the tabs come on larger HP motors.

All OMC's had a trim tab, in one form or another. In some cases, it's also the exhaust outlet.

The trim tab is designed to help counteract propeller torque. Thus, the propeller rotation matters.

Most OMC trim tabs are wedge shaped to start, with adjustment possible from there.

You may be able to use one from a standard rotation engine if there is enough adjustment. I would look at the standard one. If it's wedge shaped, get the correct one for your engine.

I would only use an OEM anode. They are a special blend of metals to be sacrificial must faster than the rest of the engine. Also, make sure any auxillary grounds between the mid section and powerhead are there.

Part #76 on this illustration is the trim tab, this is just for reference, not the actual one for the motor in this thread

I know what the tab is for and I have seen them in parts lists, its just that I never had a motor with one of this kind (shown above)Didn't know the exhaust was considered a torque countering mechanism.I guess that would be ambidextrous the exhaust for either right or left rotation??????????The prop does increase the torque however the centrifical force of the engine above water produces the majority of torque than the prop.

anauburnfan the parts I referred you to are for your counter rotation motor in my first post above.

The trim tab has absolutely nothing to do with torque developed at the powerhead, it deals with the torque created at the prop due to pressure differences created while the prop is turning in the water.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will look for used or salvage trim tab fin and will get the OEM anode.

I do have one question though - what are the auxillary grounds between midsection and powerhead mentioned in DJ's post?

There is, typically, a ground strap between the mid section and the powerhead. Sometimes one between the lower cowl pan and the powerhead too.

If you don't see any obvios evidence of them being there, at one time, don't worry about it.
