And yet another pricing question

Appreciate all the input and advice on this. I've been looking at Chaparrals since last summer (first boat) and have liked them since then. Went to the boat show recently and still like the Chap. The one other contender was the Bryant, but the 190 is really tight inside and the 210, my favorite of them all, is over my price range. I've found an 05 Chap 190 SSi with <50 hours on 4.3 carb'd. Book with the swim platform, bimini, depth sounder, snap-in carpet is about $15k, adding in $1500 for the trailer brings me up to $16,500. Seller has been sitting on it for a while. Wants $18k firm. Dealer has an 08 offered at $23,900 brand new with trailer. I don't want to pay for new and take the initial depreciation hit but mentioning this for reference. I know it's a tough market and there are plenty of others out there, but with a nearly 'new' 05 is it worth $1500 over book value? Also is the carb going to cause me to wish I got the MPI?

Thanks

Where are you located. I know of a 2006 Chaparral 204 SSI that you might be able to pick up cheap, it is a bank repo.

In this market nothing is worth 1500 over book. I just bought my latest boat in October for 1/3 of its surveyed value. check local bank and credit union web sites many have thier repo's listed.

One thing I should have mentioned that may or may not affect the 'over book value' amount I stated. NADA only lists Low and Average Retail, which is defined as needing some minor TLC. There is no value given for 'High Retail'. Since this boat is in like-new condition it is probably above 'Average'. If this changes the value by $1500 - $2000, then the asking price is about market value.

There are LOTS of used boats out there, but I don't want to be greedy and lose a good deal trying to get a better deal. Bottom line, I just don't like to spend more than I have to. :D

Thanks

Bottom line-
You've done your homework, know what you want,,,,,,,, is this it?
Yes, there are a LOT OF OPTIONS OUT THERE. But, does this make your toes curl?
If it does,,,,, jump on it.
If not,, keep looking!

One more thing to consider is the owner may owe more than it is worth and is trying to get out from under debt with the current economy. And my final piece of advice that I myself sometimes find hard to follow is NEVER I MEAN NEVER GET EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO A THING. this will cost you greatly every time. just wait until the bank takes it from the guy and the price will go down exponentially.

I agree with slasmith, this guy is upside down and won't settle for less than payoff. There are some amazing deals out there right now. I've never heard of anyone being disappionted by waiting and shopping smart. Sometimes upset they missout on one or two, but always happy they waited for the right one @ the right price. Just my 2 cents.

Ok, I pulled the trigger. I went for the 05 Chaparral. I actully looked at this boat last fall at a different marina. It was on consignment and a few weeks later was gone. We were told it was sold. It was beautiful and we were very disappointed as I figured it would be available in a few months at a better price. When we went to look at the boat we are now purchasing, my wife noticed the name on the tag and she remembered it was the same name. Same boat! Maybe a sign? Anyway, it's 4 years old, but is like new. It has a full bumper-to-bumber warranty until 2012 through a third-party bought when the boat was purchased and is transferrable. I've wanted a Chap since I first checked them out last year and this is a pretty nice one. I think the price is about as low as I'm going to find for this boat. Of course a repo or something could come along, but I think this is a pretty good deal. Maybe not a complete steal, but a good deal. It will be perfect for the 4 of us to play for the summer and hopefully many more. The warranty is a nice plus to remove worries for at least 3 years.

Thanks to everyone for your input and advice.

Re: And yet another pricing question

You will not be sorry with the decision to purchase a Chaparral. I just purchased a 2006 204SSi and it is awesome. Chaparral really pays attention to the details and you will find as you look the boat over that they really do not scrimp on all the parts and pieces and they are very well built. I looked at the Cobalts and I personally cannot tell a difference between the two. Build quality and components are about the same in my opinion, and the Chaps are a lot less. I also do not agree that you can always find the exact boat that you want and get a screaming deal on it every time. Ya I got a great deal but they are just not giving these boats away at much under NADA at least in the PNW. I did look at one repo but you could tell it was not very well taken care of, so I payed a bit more and got exactly what I wanted and an extended warranty to boot. You will enjoy the boat long after you have forgotten what you paid for it.

IMHO. anyone pricing toys over book price, with the stock market down under 7,000 is hoping for a sucker!
