And the guy had no clue why it happened

Yesterday we went cruising out in Voyageur's National Park. Nice sunny day, light breeze, warm.

Jetskis, skiing and tubing are prohibited, so when we saw someone who was towing two tubes, we figured they weren't aware of the rules. Anyway they apparently decided to stop at one of the park sites (camping or picnic) with a dock, still towing the tubes. One tube had one rider, the other about 4. This clown charges across the channel at full bore, heading towards the dock. A couple of kids bounce off their float, wearing their PFDs and start screaming.

The captain stops and throws it into reverse, almost hitting the single kid on the float, over the line of the other float and right up towards the kids in the water. He shut down just before he gets to them, saving them being whacked by the prop.

Pulls in the two kids and takes off again, catching the line of the tube with 2 kids still on it with the lower unit. They get dumped when it's jerked, there is a big bang and the boat stops. Caught the rope in the prop.

Now they are maybe 100 yards from the dock, so the captain, screaming at the kids for doing this, raises the motor, clears the rope, lowers the motor and starts to head for shore. Engine revs up but boat barely moves (probably spun hub). He keeps swearing and heads towards the dock. When he gets there, he puts it in reverse but keeps going into the rock onshore.

Has one of the kids get out to push him off, but apparently put it in drive because the kid is pushing for all he's worth and the boat goes forward, landing on his foot.

Captain screams at the kid, then jumps on the dock to check him out. Boat starts drifting away. Captain apparently doesn't want to get wet, so the kids in the boat and on the floats get in the water and try to push the boat towards the dock. That's a no go, so one gets the idea to swim the line over to the dock and let the adult pull it in. The Captain barely has the end of the line (maximum distance for the line) and pulls.

Splash....pulled in by the boat and his standing on the edge of the dock. We headed on, laughing and wondering if they would still be there when we headed in.

At the end of the day, we passed by with the idea we would help get them back to the ramp if they were still there. They were no where to be seen, so we head back to the ramp. There they are, trying to load to the trailer. We get loaded and their boat is still being loaded. The guy starts off the conversation "great day on the lake, but the kids really don't know how to handle a boat". The oldest was maybe 11 and he was having them try to load it. I gave them a hand and as they get into their van, the guy says "dumb kids really know how to f**kup a day on the lake". Takes off with his lines dragging, never lifted the lower unit, and PFD flys out of the boat.

Saw him gassing up at the main highway, gave him the lost PFD and headed home. And people wonder why I don't really enjoy seeing tourists from the big city come up this way.

At least there were no major injuries.

Just glad nobody got hurt is right...that guy is asking for trouble being that irresponsible.

Kinda reminds me of Dan Akroyd's character in "The Great Outdoors" where he rents the jet boat callled "suck my wake" :D

Good thing they were only on vacation, and may not be back.

You did read too much into that. The kids were fine, they were at a safe location, and never indicated they had a problem.

We didn't head back in, we continued down lake, planning to and in fact checking the site before we headed in for the day. At worst, they would have had to sit on the beach for two hours, and this was on an active channel, so they could signal for help, if needed.

When I helped the kids trailer the boat, one told me the Captain is his old man and this was one of his better days. Seems he is always getting himself into trouble when cruising at home in the Twin Cities area. Said his dad blamed everyone for his problems and he would go up north to prove it wasn't him. Even a 9 year old was able to figure out the Captain was a danger to everyone else. The kids said they had a good time, enjoyed a picnic on the beach while the Captain worked at clearing the lower unit and a nice Park Ranger told them about rules against tubing in a national park.

The kids saw us sitting off shore watching and knew they could have asked for help if they really felt in danger. And they, not the Captain, thanked me for the assist in trailering the boat. His 9 year old son said once it took almost 3 hours before someone helped them trailer the boat last time. Seems old dad doesn't have the patience to do it right and dropped their first boat on the ramp when he pulled out. Didn't hook up the winch, just drove it onto the trailer and pulled out.

When I asked him what his father did for a living............he's a corporate lawyer.

Well you have to feel sorry for the Captain. He's obviously educated well beyond his native intelligence.

That's how my father used to explain these things. :D

I laugh when people are stubbornly stupid but only risk hurting themselves or their equipment. This story is too scary for words. Too bad there is no effective way to get those types off the water.
If a ranger was nearby, and you could tell him all you saw before he goes and confronts the guy, maybe the ranger could take him out of the game. If the guy displays the same bad attitude as you saw, the ranger (hopefully) would take him off the river in handcuffs. But they're never around when you need them.
Backing up to pick up a dropped tuber, across the lines. Unbelievable.

And no more lawyer comments. There are idiots and asshats in every walk of life.

You are correct on all accounts. Especially the last comment. The comments about lawyers was just in good fun. Dont take it the wrong way. I have a few guys that work with me that I would be utterly terrified of being out on a boat.

He is in the "it cant possibly be ME that's wrong" group that seems to show up way too often. The aversion to admit your own mistakes, just causes more mistakes. My dad taught me (by being one of these types) to laugh at myself more often than at others.

Yep, save face by blaming the kids, even though everyone then thinks what a crappy job you did in teaching them.

Sorry but what a fool. I have a distaste for lawyers and this sounds too stupid even for a lawyer.
